Masako -------------------------- Conference on bears Yomiuri Shimbun Nov 20, 2001 A London-based international organization, World Society for the Protection of Animals, and its Japanese member societies ALIVE and JWCS, will host a special conference on the condition of bears in Japanese parks on Dec. 1 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the YMCA Asia Youth Center near JR Suidobashi Station in Tokyo. Guest speakers include zoologist Barbara Maas, an expert on animal behavior, and WSPA's senior officer, Victor Watkins. Simultaneous interpretation in English and Japanese is available at the conference. The organizations claim that bears at such parks are kept in grossly overcrowded and barren enclosures, where they fight and beg for food thrown at them by tourists. The event also discusses the problem of bears being killed as pests in agricultural areas. Admission is 1,000 yen. Those who would like to participate are asked to register in advance by calling ALIVE at (03) 5815-7522. The seats will assigned on a first-come first-served basis.
