Guest guest
I sent the following email to Kala in support of Mr. Senaratne, about whom she posted earlier. Thanks to Kala for bringing this to our attention. ---------------------- Dear Sirs I have read with alarm and unease that unacceptable television censorship is being practiced in Kadamalla. I understand that the television producer Mr. Senaratne, who recently showed the Peta 'Meet Your Meat' video on Rupavahini in Kadamalla has been punished for presenting this program. The Director General of Rupavahini has apparently said that Mr. Senaratne can no longer work on programs in Kadamalla. The excuse being given is that some viewers complained about the video. Some exposes of evil in our world are uncomfortable to watch and upsetting, but we must be given the choice of whether we wish to watch them or not. To impose censorship of such programs, and for someone else to decide what we can and can't watch is a violation of our universal rights. Viewers must be given the option of whether they wish to watch such programs or not. A few dissenting voices are to be expected and do not represent the majority of viewers. Since the excuse of some people being 'disgusted' by viewing the program sounds ridiculous, I can only surmise that Mr. Senaratne is being silenced by vested interests; those who have something to lose by a truthful look at the cruelty and corruption involved in the meat industry. People in other countries are free to watch this video, and others like it. What we eat is an increasingly important health issue. We have the right to know the facts so we can make an educated decision about what we eat. In a Buddhist country like Sri Lanka, I would think a program such as 'Meet Your Meat' would be of even more interest and relevance than usual. Maybe someone should do an expose of the reasons why a Buddhist country like Sri Lanka is consuming meat!? Those of us around the world who have heard of what has happened to Mr. Senaratne are outraged that he could be dismissed like this. Isn't there any body or group in Sri Lanka responsible for guarding the rights of the media? If the media are punished for 'trampling on toes', then we can no longer look to the media to keep us informed. If there is no group in Sri Lanka to represent Mr. Senaratne, and act to have him reinstated to his original position, then perhaps an international group would be interested. This is a very important issue and we would ignore the treatment of Mr. Senaratne at our peril. If he can be silenced, who next? Catherine Ahern ----------------------- Message: 1 Thu, 11 Oct 2001 06:47:22 +0600 (GMT) santhak <santhak Help the producer of Kadamalla Dear Friends I gave the Meat your Meat video from Peta to the producer Mr.Senaratne and it was shown on the 6th of Saturday in the Rupavahini which is the National television Channel. Many people commended that programme Kadamalla. Some said they will not eat meat after seeing that. But Director general of Rupavahini has stopped the producer Mr Senaratne from doing any future programms. He will not be allowed to do any more progrmms in~Kadamalla. He said that some people have complained that they were disgusted with the programme. I am sure the Meat industry people must have been behind them.Director general can't say anything like that. Now poor Mr Senaratne is without work because Diector General has stopped him from doing any more programmes in Kadamalla. Sri Lanka is a Buddhist country. Lord Buddha has mentioned that it is a sin to kill the animals. If yuu can write a letter condemning this action I can send that to an English news paper.
