Guest guest
Sharks to be shot on sight (Western Australia) From AAP 03oct01 SHARKS will be shot on sight if they threaten Perth beachgoers, under a new shark attack response plan introduced by the West Australian government. A spokesman for Fisheries Minister Kim Chance says the minister has authorised fisheries officers and water police to shoot sharks longer than three metres long which endanger human life. The move follows a horrific shark attack at Perth's Cottesloe beach in November last year which killed a 49-year-old-man and seriously injured his friend. The 4.5-metre white pointer shark responsible was followed by fisheries officials for some time after the attack but they were unable to kill it because then Fisheries Minister Monty House was unavailable to give the order. Mr Chance's spokesman says the new plan will avoid any unnecessary delays in destroying sharks posing an immediate threat to the public. He says killing sharks is still a last resort and only to be used when human life is in imminent danger.
