THE GREENS/EFA IN THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT

PRESS RELEASE - Brussels, 19 September 2001

Chinese ask USA to back their fight against separatism in Tibet

Reinhold Messner: Chinese conditions for supporting the USA are immoral

Green MEP Reinhold Messner today criticised a statement by the Chinese

Government yesterday stating conditions for Chinese support of the US' fight

against terrorism. Under the proposal, the USA should support China's

supression of separatism in Tibet, Taiwan and Xinjiang in exchange for

China's support for the anti terrorism campaign.

Reinhold Messner, MEP and Vice President of the Tibet Intergroup in the

European Parliament declares:

" To punish the Tibetan people in this particular moment sends out a

terrible signal to the world. The Tibetans have never resorted to terrorism

in their long non-violent struggle for a true autonomy, as they follow the

peaceful principles of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

" The immoral Chinese conditions, which are to trade the world's moral and

political support for His Holiness the Dalai Lama in exchange for Chinese

support of America's war against terrorism, are unacceptable. They would

irreparably damage the Tibetan people who have, since the Chinese

occupation, followed a non-violent struggle with international support. The

priority of the world now should be to fight terrorism and not to suppress

the justified demands of oppressed peoples. "
