Guest guest
HSUS Report: Terrorist AttacksHSUS Sit Rep: Terrorist AttacksDate/Time: 9/11/01, 2:00 pmFiled by: Anne Culver, HSUS HQThe HSUS Headquarters and Mid Atlantic Regional Office (MARO) have been checking with animal shelters in the Washington DC metropolitan and New York City areas to determine needs in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks. In DC:The DC Emergency Management Agency has not discussed evacuation of residents for the city, so we are not putting out any "take them with you" messages because of the incredible rumor mill that either city can produce. We have been working with the Washington Humane Society, which is also the animal control agency for the city, and have set up an evacuation plan for them, including transportation, housing, supplies, personnel. Their facility does not appear to be near any possible terrorist targets but could be in a "miss" area, so we do not anticipate an evacuation. In NYC:The MARO has been contacting animal shelters in the NYC area with not much luck getting through on the telephones. They did contact the shelter closest to the World Trade Center (E. 38th street) and foud it was fine with no smoke impact.Calls to other shelters are still being attempted.General:Any shelter or media that we have spoken with, we have been encouraging to take this event as a reminder that a disaster plan is essential. We have been asking them to spread the word that people with animals should do these four things: have a plan, have a disaster kit, and know where they will go, and TAKE THEM WITH YOU. We are working also on the issue of unaccompanied animals on diverted aircraft. All affected buildings are (were) commercial -- meaning a very minimum number of animals were likely directly involved. No news if any nearby residential buildings in Battery Park City were indirectly affected.Lower Manhattan area is densely commercial -- meaning there are far fewer strays than in other areas of Manhattan.More likely there will be orphaned animals waiting at home for their guardians who were killed.++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++NYC Animal Emergency ListingsSource: Message forwarded by cecibn (Beatrice Welles)Friends: We have witnessed a devastating effect on our nation.
