Jail demanded for rare orangutan trader

OSAKA -- A man who violated animal trading laws by

purchasing endangered orangutans should be jailed and

fined 5 million yen, prosecutors told a court here

Thursday.

In the case against the man, 40-year-old Hiroharu

Kaito, prosecutors also requested that the pet shop

operating company the accused formerly managed be

fined 1 million yen.

" It was a devious and malicious crime, in which the

defendant put profit first and ignored the problems of

rare-animal trading, and its effect on society is

serious, " prosecutors told the Osaka District Court as

the trial opened Thursday. Prosecutors have requested

that Kaito be sentenced to 3-1/2 years for trading in

the animals.

Kaito is accused of buying four orangutans in December

1998 and April 1999 despite knowing they had been

imported from Indonesia. The Convention on

International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild

Fauna and Flora (CITES) forbids trading in the type of

orangutan that Kaito allegedly bought.

Prosecutors said Kaito paid 1.85 million yen for the

orangutans, buying them at an employee's house in

Osaka. (Mainichi Shimbun, Sept. 6, 2001)
