Guest guest
Dugong numbers double (Queensland,Australia) From AAP 21aug01 FEDERAL environment minister Robert Hill says dugong numbers on the southern Great Barrier Reef have more than doubled in a 15-year period. Senator Hill said latest surveys showed that dugongs in the southern reef area had increased from an estimated 1,682 in 1984 to an estimated 3,993 in 1999. The minister said a significant proportion of the dugongs found in the area were in designated sanctuaries which proved that dugong protected areas were in the right places. However, Senator Hill said there was no room for complacency, because the number of dugongs reported in 1999 was still only around three per cent of the population in 1962.
