Guest guest
China Daily http://www1.chinadaily.com.cn/cndy/2001-08-09/25404.html (HUANG YIMING) 08/09/2001 HAIKOU: A large number of wild animals rescued by police from traffickers' hands have found their temporary home at the Hainan Rescue Centre for Endangered Wild Animals. Ironically the centre which is now shielding the exotic creatures is finding itself under financial pressure as a result. The animals which were supposed to be smuggled from a number of Southeast Asian countries, include 566 monitor lizards, 259 pythons, five pangolins and more than 4,000 kilograms of wild snakes, were seized by police at Sanya, South China's Hainan Province on July 25. Because the number of wild animals is so large, it would pose a massive burden on the ecology of the local area if they were all released in Hainan, according to Wang Chundong, director of the Hainan Rescue Centre for Endangered Wild Animals. Now, the wild animals are under special care after receiving quarantine examinations by Hainan Import and Export Inspection and Quarantine Bureau. The animals will be released in a month under the direction of the State Forestry Bureau, Wang said. The case is still under investigation. It is the largest ever case of wild animal smuggling uncovered in Hainan, Wang said. To better take care of the animals, the rescue centre has provided eight rooms to house them. They have to be cleaned at least three times a day, Wang said. However, Wang revealed that the rescue centre has been put under a financial strain because the animals will eat their way through more than 20,000 yuan (US$2,500) worth of feed a month.
