Guest guest
Hi, Whaling ********* 60 Minutes has a feature on the Japanese whaling industry on Sunday night-(Australia) I hope every one watches this. It looks like they are asking all the hard questions. Seagulls ********** Here is my letter of response to the local paper ( I got verbally attacked by a shooter through the letters column because I protested about the local council shooting seagulls at the landfill site). I'll let you know if it is published. To:The Editor, Canning Community letters Dear Editor, D. Bright (letters 24th July) criticised my letter about the shooting of seagulls at Ranford Road Rubbish Tip. My assertions about the need to consider the pain and suffering of seagulls are not ill-defined or inadequately-justified. Many people feel animals should be treated with compassion and organisations exist to help animals such as Animal Liberation and the RSPCA. All living creatures including gulls deserve compassion when conflicts arise between human and non-human species. D.Bright’s comments that I should justify my lifestyle choices to prove I am committed to my convictions of non-cruelty are strange. I am a committed vegetarian and I choose cruelty free cosmetics and products as part of my lifestyle. However, organisations such as the RSPCA have many members who eat meat and use animal products yet they also oppose cruelty in our society. Society’s consideration of animals is varied and changing and I hope Canning Council will take a more humane approach to problems concerning birds in the future. Canning Council has shown they can change policies according to the wishes of the community. I’m sure the Council " extensively researched " their past actions in shooting dogs at the pound until they reconsidered this approach and changed to the method of lethal injection. Shooting seagulls at Ranford Road Rubbish Tip seemed pointless since the tip is due to close soon. After this time, most rubbish will be sent to the new state of the art " Regional Resource Recovery Centre " . This Centre should not attract birds as does the open land fill site at Ranford Road. Kind regards, Marguerite Wegner
