Aquarium supports Japanese dolphin slaughter and imports a new dolphin.

Today the Vancouver Aquarium informed the Vancouver Park Board by fax of the

arrival of a new dolphin imported this morning into Stanley Park. The new

dolphin was bought from a dolphinarium in Osaka, Japan - an aquarium which

regularly purchases dolphins from bloody dolphin drives where hundreds of

animals are slaughtered on the beach and a selected few are sold to

dolphinariums around the world.

It is dolphinariums like this one in Vancouver that finance and support the

cruelty of killing and capturing dolphins. For more information and video

footage of a Japanese dolphin drive, please visit the websites:

A Park Board bylaw restricts the aquarium from importing dolphins captured

after September 1996. The Coalition For No Whales In Captivity warned the

board in April that the aquarium was planning to bring dolphins from Japan.

At the April presentation, the board was shown the video of a dolphin drive

in Ikki Island, Japan. Chairwoman Laura McDiarmid gave her personal

guarantee to Annelise Sorg, director of the Coalition For No Whales In

Captivity, that the aquarium would inform the board of any new dolphins it

planned to import into Stanley Park well before the arrival of any new

animals. This was necessary in order to review documentation and confirm

that new dolphins met the bylaw's restrictions.

SUBJECT:- Parks commissioner.

______________________________from here______________________________

Dear Parks commissioner:

Ms. Roslyn Cassells is outraged at the aquarium’s disregard for process:

“Bringing a new dolphin into Stanley Park without first advising the

commissioners is a flagrant disregard for the wishes of

the public and the authority of the Vancouver Park Board. ”The Green Party

Commissioner then noted the timing the aquarium used, informing the park

board the morning after the last park board meeting before the summer break

(which lasts till mid-Sept.).  " Clearly the NPA and the Aquarium are in

cahoots again, denying the public the chance to comment on the aquisition,

and our staff the chance to check out the authenticity of the information

contained in the aquarium's letter to us.  It is

well known that there is no reputable system for tracking marine mammals,

the aquarium is playing with smoke and mirrors again.  They just want to

generate more revenue. "

When are you going to learn that dolphins belong in the wild open seas and

not caged in a pond?  All you care about is to make a profit from visitors

to these cruel aquariums - attractions.   These visitors especialy the

children learn that it is OK to be cruel to other non humans and in turn be

cruel to humans as well.

You are responsible for these crimes on non humans and humans alike.  Have

you ever thought to be locked in your house for the rest of your natural

life without ever stepping out to interact with other humans.  While food

will be provided to you visitors will come and see how you are coping living

in this house, caged in it.  Then ‘scientists’ do research on you to learn

how stressful it is to live in such an environment. You be an attraction to

us humans and by paying an entrance fee jobs will be created for your

keepers.  What do you think about that.

Yours sincerely,

NAME AND STATE
