Guest guest Posted July 26, 2001 Report Share Posted July 26, 2001 Asia for Animals conference resolutions, unanimously passed by acclaim: 1) To express support to the efforts of the Philippine Animal Welfare Society and various other environmental and/or humane groups in their fight against the Ocean Adventure Park in Subic, a case which has big implications for the implementation of the Philippine Animal Welfare Act, proposed by Trixie Concepcion; 2) To support the international boycott of Indian leather, to save Indian cattle from cruelty, requested by the Hon. Richard Jones, Chinny Krishna, Rahul Sehgal, Payal Sodhi, Suparna Saraswati, Dr. Sandeep Jain, and Pradeep Kumar Nath. 3) To help and support Indian non-governmental organizations to protect sea turtles, requested by the Hon. Richard Jones, Chinny Krishna, Rahul Sehgal, Payal Sodhi, Suparna Saraswati, Dr. Sandeep Jain, and Pradeep Kumar Nath. 4) To support the proposal to ban the killing of whale sharks along the west coast of India, requested by the Hon. Richard Jones, Chinny Krishna, Rahul Sehgal, Payal Sodhi, Suparna Saraswati, Dr. Sandeep Jain, and Pradeep Kumar Nath. 5) To support the prevention of illegal trafficking in wildlife and wildlife parts, e.g. the traffic in dolphins and chiru, requested by the Hon. Richard Jones, Chinny Krishna, Rahul Sehgal, Payal Sodhi, Suparna Saraswati, Dr. Snadeep Jain, and Pradeep Kumar Nath. 6) The decommissioned submarine and frigate battleship should be immediately removed from the turtle habitat at Visakhapatnam, requested by Pradeep Kumar Nath, of the Visakha SPCA. 7) The Visakha municipality should cooperate with the Visakha SPCA in facilitating Animal Birth Control, requested by Pradeep Kumar Nath, of the Visakha SPCA. 8) The Governor and Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, India, must stop animal sacrifices, as must the other levels of government throughout India, requested by Pradeep Kumar Nath, of the Visakha SPCA. 9) The Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh must stop construction to hotels all along the beaches, as this will destroy the turtle habitat, requested by Pradeep Kumar Nath, of the Visakha SPCA. 10) To stop the illegal harvesting of turtles in Indonesia and the sale of turtles on Turtle Island, requested by Sherry Grant, of Bali, Indonesia. 11) That this conference respectfully requests that the Chinese government should give urgent consideration to introducing legislation to prevent cruelty to animals, and ensure adequate welfare for animals. Richard Jones, Chinny Krishna, Rahul Sehgal, Payal Sodhi, Suparna Saraswati, Dr. Sandeep Jain, and Pradeep Kumar Nath. The resolutions were submitted by the delegates in writing to chair Chris Hanselman, who read them each aloud and asked all in favor to say aye. Afterward he gave the stack of written resolutions to me to record. I am told that there was one more resolution passed, encouraging the release of bears from bile farms in China and elsewhere.
