Guest guest
News about the Styx forest in Tasmania ********************************************** Senator Bob Brown has written a book about the Styx forest (Valley of the Giants) in Tasmania. Parts of this forest are threatened by logging and the Styx forest is one of the natural wonders of the world http://www.wilderness.org.au/help/valgiant.html This book was written by Bob Brown after Forestry Tasmania effectively banned the Wilderness Society's self drive brochure on the Styx as a condition for the renewal of the Society's 2001 tourism licence. The Valley of the Giants covers a number of aspects of the old growth forests of the Styx valley: birds and animals, botany, the history of the area including the fact that the last 6 (Tasmanian) tigers were trapped in the Florentine valley near the Styx; tourism and jobs; sections on the world's tallest trees, as well as those in Australia. He also includes 'Slaying of the Giants' by Bob Ellis. The book touches on such fascinating and poignant facts as the steel pole that commemorates the tallest tree in the Gippsland forests, now isolated in a cleared paddock. This is the fate of too many old growth forests. It also includes a range of colour photographs of the Styx forest itself and of Forestry Tasmania's activities there. As a guide book for the traveller to the Styx forest, a map and odometer tour guide enables people to visit features of the forest even if marking tapes have been removed. Grid references to Tasmap 1/25000 maps also pinpoint the locations referred to in the text. This book is an invaluable resource for anyone planning to visit the Styx area and anyone who is interested in the fate of Tasmania's old growth forests, the struggle to save what remains of them and the activities of Forestry Tasmania. The Valley of the Giants retails for $12.95 inc. GST, with 10% discount for Wilderness Society members. Postage and handling is $2.00, inc. GST. Available only within Australia.
