SMU students adopt orang utan

by Chia Hui Kheng

Singapore Management University students have raised more than $5,000

to adopt an orang utan by selling 800 tickets to a party at Zouk disco.

Two-year old orang utan Chomel was also at the party last month.

Chomel was there on behalf of the 7-month old Hong Xing adopted by

SMU undergraduates.

Hong Xing herself could not be there as she's too young to leave her

enclosure at the zoo.

Nicknamed Project Primate, Hong Xing's adoption is the students' first

community service project.

At the party, money was also raised at a photo-taking session with Chomel.

This will go to a wildlife conservation fund.

Nadir Ali Zafar, a SMU undergraduate, said: " Other people did community

projects which helped the disadvantaged children or the needy folks, that's

good. But we feel that not enough is focused on the endangered species like

the orang utan. "
