The Star 3.7.01 - Penang SPCA volunteer looking for home for German

Shepherd.

 

It was love at first sight for SPCA volunteer Verona McColl and Ben, the

German Shepherd which was chained on a short leash at a Tanjong Bungah house

and left to survive on food scraps and water given by neighbours for a year.

Ben could not have been happier now, leading a good life and getting lots of

tender loving care from Verona and her husband Douglas since they adopted it

in January.

Verona said her heart went out to 12 year old Ben the first time she set

eyes on it at the SPCA after it was rescued in February last year.

" It broke my heart to see the terrible state Ben was in. It was all skin

and bones and could barely stand - yet alone walk. I wanted to bring Ben

home immediately but it was too weak. I had to wait for almost a year

before it was strong enough and could eat properly again " , Verona said.

She said Ben was always hungry when he first came home and would eat four to

five meals a day for about four months before his appetite returned to

normal.

Ben was a gentle and affectionate dog and a hit with children visiting their

home, adding that its best friend used to be a kitten which she rescued from

the Youth Park.

" They would play hide and seek and Ben would lick the kitten all over like

its mother. Ben was very sad when I gave the kitten away " , she said.

The McColls would be returning to Europe in September and are looking for a

good home for Ben. I would love to take him with us but he is not fit to

travel, " she said.

Verona said she was hoping that the new tenants of their house would adopt

Ben as " the dog comes with the house " but if they refused she would find it

another home.

" I am confident that someone will have compassion for Ben after the hard

life he has been through, " she said.
