" No shark-fin at Chen's Banquet " : President's Daughter Engaged.

The Straits Times, Singapore

Monday, July 2, 2001.

Taipei - Shark fin soup was left off the menu at a NT$75,000 (S$4,000)

banquet, hosted by Taiwan's President Chen Shui-bian at the engagement

ceremony of his dentist daughter Chen Hsing-yu and orthopaedic surgeon Chao

Chien-ming yesterday.

Seafood - especially abalone, lobster, dried scallop and crabs - was the

main ingredient on the 11-course menu, reported the United Evening News.

But shark-fin soup was off the list because environmentalists warn that so

many sharks are being killed for soup that the fish could soon face

extinction.

The caterer gave a special discount to the First Family and the meal was

prepared by eight chefs.

Ms Chen, 26, has been seeing her 30-year-old boyfriend for about six

months. They plan to marry in September.
