Guest guest Posted June 23, 2001 Report Share Posted June 23, 2001 22 June 2001 ANZFA ISSUES WARNING ON CONSUMPTION OF SOY SAUCE http://www.anzfa.gov.au/documents/mr19_01.asp***********************************************Soy sauce cancer scare From AAP23jun01THE National Food Authority says Asian cooking buffs should bin a host ofimported soy and oyster sauces from the pantry.The Australia New Zealand Food Authority (ANZFA) has placed an emergency banon some soy and oyster sauce imports found to contain high levels ofpotential cancer-causing agents.Quarantine officers have been asked to ban any imported soy and oystersauces containing dangerous levels of the chemical chloropropanol.ANZFA has banned 22 brands from entering Australia, including sauce productsfrom Golden Mountain in Thailand, Pearl River Bridge in China, Lee Kum Keefrom China and Hong Kong and Wanjasham in Taiwan.People should check their cupboards for the products and throw them in thebin.People should not fear being struck down with illness after one or twostir-fry meals, with the effects believed to come from continuousconsumption.Occasional consumption of the sauces was unlikely to cause adverse healtheffects, ANZFA said.Soy sauces manufactured using only a traditional, or natural, fermentationprocess are regarded as safe.
