Animal Lib Queensland [alibqld] Wednesday, 13 June 2001 14:36 animal.liberation; alqld; JanOliver [alqld] group promote 'shoot a dingo tours' In a totally tastless move the BACKPACKERS TRAVEL CENTRE are promoting 'shoot a dingo tours' using the greenpeace logo (no less). The ad reads: " Shoot a dingo tour - just think about it - only 20 left " Please write or phone them and complain loudly! Tell them: Dingoes, like all animals, have a right to live free from human abuse and exploitation. What the Queensland Government has done to the Fraser Is dingoes is wrong because the dingo is being blamed for human misuse of the natural environment. The abuse of dingoes as a tourist attraction has led to excessive numbers of campers littering and degrading the world heritage listed national park, and creating the conditions that have lead to dingo attacks. It is a PEOPLE problem: too many people, too carelessly enforced rules on feeding. People can and do sucessfully live with savage animals - as they do with lions and bears in other tourist destinations - without having to eradicate the very thing they come to see to remove the danger. Using dingo killing as an adversting gimmick sends the wrong message to tourists - we do not want to be seen as nation of wildife exterminators. Dingoes are native animals and deserve the respect we give our fauna else where. Promoting their deaths as 'fun' does nothing to improve human relationships with the natural world. Whether this advertisment is of a satirical nature or not, the abuse and demonisation of dingoes by the state and landholders is the result ot human mismanagment. Our continued disposal of problems by culling is a matter of economic expedience. It is a symptom of a state government that will not spend on the environment, while pumping cash into football stadiums, corporate and agricultural 'welfare', all of which do not contribute to conservation, indeed many of which increase environmental degradation like mining and monoculture industrialised farming.
