June 9, 2001 Animal swap with foreign zoos saves baht and adds diversity The government yesterday agreed to barter some of Thailand's rare animals with wildlife reserves in Malaysia, Singapore and the United States. Krasae Chanawong, PM's Office minister who oversees the Zoological Park Organisation, said the agreements would enable Thailand to obtain pedigree animals without spending as much as 20 million baht to obtain new animals. Dr Krasae said the agreements would also help create a good relationship between Thailand and other countries. Mr Pisit said Thailand would trade a clouded leopard and a banded palm civet with a white tiger from the US; a clouded leopard, a golden cat, a spotted linsang and a sarus crane with a seladang and a Borneo orang-utang from Malaysia; and a bay bamboo rat, a large bamboo rat, a Burmese ferret badger, a hog badger, a yellow-throated martin, a clouded leopard, a white cheek gibbon and a large Indian civet with a patas monkey, a serval, an orang-utang, a fat-tailed lemur, an angole cow, a cape buffalo and a spotted hyena from Singapore.
