Guest guest
FORWARDED MESSAGE:------ Regardless of your politics, please consider participating in a demonstration of conservation... it could make a difference. Mark your calendar to remember! VOLUNTARY ROLLING BLACKOUT THE FIRST DAY OF SUMMER JUNE 21, 2001 THURSDAY, 7-10pm worldwide, all time zones As an alternative to George W. Bush's " energy policies " and lack of emphasis on efficiency, conservation and alternative fuels, there will be a voluntary rolling blackout on the first day of summer (summer solstice), June 21 at 7pm - 10pm in any time zone (this will roll it across the planet). It's a simple protest and a symbolic act. Turn out your lights from 7pm-10pm on June 21. Unplug whatever you can unplug in your house. Light a candle, kiss and tell or not, take a stroll in the dark, invent ghost stories, anything that's not electric - have fun in the dark. Forward this email as widely as possible, to your government representatives and environmental contacts. Let them know we want global education, participation and funding in conservation, efficiency and alternative fuel efforts -- and an end to overexploitation and misuse of the earth's resources. Say no to more nuclear reactors, oil drilling in the Arctic, and excessive oil drilling and fossil fuel consumption in general. ************************************************ * Stanley Szwagiel * * Waste Management Supervisor * * University of Toronto * * Tel: (416) 946 - 5711 * * Fax: (416) 971 - 2994 * * Mobile: (416) 676 - 6451 * * E-mail: stan.szwagiel * *******************
Guest guest
John copy of a letter sent to Mr Williams -------------- I have received a copy of John Weddurburn's letter (introducing elephant rides at Taronga zoo). A while ago I visited your zoo (I was living at the time in Mosman) and frankly was appalled. I expect to see elephants confined in cramped conditions in some parts of the world - but Sydney - no, I was very surprised (and disappointed). The elephant I saw at the time was clearly showing signs of boredom and mental stress and certainly I always make a point of mentioning this to anyone I know who is visiting Sydney. Other animals at the time were in very small enclosures with in my opinion a very poor quality of life (the Tigers in particular). When I got Johns email with news of your plan for your elephants I wasnt surprised at all. But I guess you will argue that elephant rides will cure its boredom! So many zoos around the world do good work and I would have expected Australia to have been up there with the best. I urge you to reconsider your attitude to the animals in your zoo and in particular to the elephants. Its not just about elephant rides it is the entire ethos of Taronga Zoo. Mr S.
