Guest guest
As Contradições da Igreja Católica ... It has been suggested by a good friend in Spain, that I post something to the list regarding the Amsterdam Treaty, its Protocol, and some comments about animal cruelty and the Roman Catholic Church. AMSTERDAM TREATY: Protocol on protection and welfare of animals THE HIGH CONTRACTING PARTIES, DESIRING to ensure improved protection and respect for the welfare of animals as sentientbeings, HAVE AGREED UPON the following provision which shall be annexed to the Treaty estab-lishing the European Community, In formulating and implementing the Community’s agriculture, transport, internal Market andresearch policies, the Community and the Member States shall pay full regard to the welfarerequirements of animals, while respecting the legislative or administrative provisions andcustoms of the Member States relating in particular to religious rites, cultural traditions andregional heritage. Religious rites, cultural traditions and regional heritage automatically nullify the Protocol and make it another typical oxymoron, while its wording, "improved protection" is open-ended - improved from what to where? The Roman Catholic Church holds all its bullfights on "Fiestas' or Holy Days, and also on Sundays. It supports these atrocities because it gains membership and makes money by so doing - it has nothing to do with its beliefs, and certainly, Saint Francis of Assisi is but a nominal Saint in the Catholic Calendar, rserved for one day of the year. The currnet shriekies going on in other lists about writing letters to HH the Pope, along with platitudes about "new liturgies" (presumably in the Anglican Church?) incoporating animals, are a waste of time. After two thousand years of Christainity animals suffer even more than they ever have, so their prospects under this, and most other religions, are abysmal. In spite of the pressures of WSPA - World Society for the Protection of Animals, together with other associations in several countries, Pope John Paul II was unable to issue a declaration condemning the cruelty towards animals at religious festivals in Spain. Instead, in January of last year, he received in a private meeting Jesulin de Ubrique , one of the most important Spanish matadors. In the meeting, Ubrique who has tortured and killed hundreds of animals in Spanish bullfighs, offered Pope a statue of the Holy Mary. "It is not the first time that this has happened" said Mila Sanz de Galdeano, from the Spanish association of animal's rights ANDA. "The hierarchy of the Catholic Church is very involved in the promotion of bullfights. Some time ago a torero offered the Pope a cape with the image of Holy Mary". A month after this meeting, the member of WSPA in the Czech Republic, Nasace, presented a demand to the Pope's representative at Prague, asking for the condemnation of the cruelty at bullfights. The presentation was made with more than 7000 letters received from the public after they had seen the video of WSPA on television. But unfortunately there was no answer from the Pope's representative (in Animal International, Summer 1997). Pope John Paul II receives a gift of a statue of the Virgin Mary from the Matador Jesulin de Ubrique..... Transcription of the letter sent by Cardinal Gasparri at 23 October of 1920 to the President of SPA (Society of Animal's Protection) of Toulon about bullfights: "......no one can forget that the church still condemns openly, as it always did , those bloody and cruel shows." Nevertheless..... Corrida de Touros comemorativa dos 500 Anos das Misericórdias (1998)... Bullfight to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Charitable Institution (1998) Answer from Cardinal Gasparri dated of 18 October 1921 to the letter sent by the President of the SPA of Toulon about bullfights: "I thank the letter sent by you concerning bullfights. Long ago they are condemned by Santa Sé: the Bull of Pio V, that you refer to, is well known. I regret the fact as much as you do and I desire that all over the rules of Santa Sé concerning this issue are observed. I hope that your SPA, so charitable to animals can and have the means to contribute to end these bloody shows". In this letter is remembered the Bull of Pio V, which specifies that bullfights are forbidden ant that the penalty will be excommunicated ipso facto incurrenda. Nevertheless..... Priest Victor Melícias honours and congratulates the torero João Moura (1998)...... Father Victor Melicias OFM CONVENTO FRANCISCANO LARGO DA LUZ 1500 LISBOA PORTUGAL Father Melicias OFM, is a priest of the Franciscan Order - what an open insult to his Saintly Patron Francis! The only thing that will rid the world of bullfights and its henchmen, will be MCD/ BSE, FMD and other natural defences. All sentient beings, and all laws supposedly protecting them, have to be above religious beliefs, tradtions and other related "values" concocted for the comfort of humans only.
