Guest guest
Source: Current PETA Action Alerts / No Date ============================================ Please forward to other animal advocates ============================================ Minnesota state trooper Mark Lund reportedly ran over a turkey deliberately with his vehicle in Chaska because the bird was reportedly pecking at tires and causing drivers to swerve on the road. Reports indicate that Lund killed the bird despite being told by a police officer that the bird was much loved by the community and that he should leave him alone. And although Lund has been charged with cruelty to animals and faces arraignment on June 4, the county attorney handling the case has indicated that the charges might be dropped because a Department of Natural Resources (DNR) officer encouraged Lund to commit the act. Unbelievably, a published article explains that the DNR officer ?told Lund that the bird should be killed because it was a mixture of wild and domestic turkey and would ruin the bloodline of wild turkeys.? Section 343.21 of the Minnesota statutes states that ?No person shall overdrive, overload, torture, cruelly beat, neglect, or unjustifiably injure, maim, mutilate, or kill any animal?? and Subd. 7. states, ?No person shall willfully instigate or in any way further any act of cruelty to any animal or animals, or any act tending to produce cruelty to animals.? Clearly, Lund?s acts were willful, unjustifiable, and cruel. As a state trooper sworn to uphold the state?s statutes, it is vital that Lund be held accountable for his own violations. Even if he was told by another to run over the animal, this is no excuse for cruelty. Any reasonable person, let alone a state trooper, knows that it is cruel to deliberately run over an animal. Please politely contact the county attorney to ask that the charges not be dropped and the case be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. If anything, ask that additional charges be brought against the DNR officer who collaborated and instigated this act. I was very dismayed to learn that Minnesota state trooper Mark Lund ran over a turkey deliberately with his vehicle in Chaska because the bird was reportedly pecking at tires and causing drivers to swerve on the road. Reports indicate that Lund killed the bird despite being told by a police officer that the bird was much loved by the community and that he should leave him alone. And although Lund has been charged with cruelty to animals and faces arraignment on June 4, it is my understanding that you have indicated that the charges might be dropped because a Department of Natural Resources (DNR) officer encouraged Lund to commit the act. Unbelievably, a published article explains that the DNR officer ?told Lund that the bird should be killed because it was a mixture of wild and domestic turkey and would ruin the bloodline of wild turkeys.? That is a completely invalid assertion. If anything, additional charges should be brought against the DNR officer who collaborated and instigated this act. Please send a strong message to the community that his indefensible act will not go unpunished, by seeking the maximum penalty allowed by law. Thank you for your valuable time and consideration.
