Guest guest
Dear Friends, The letter appended below was sent twice to AHA in the US. They have not responded, and I am wondering why? They have this document which says they can, and will, do the right things to protect sentient beings involved in US movies - anywhere in the world, but they don't respond to requests. Their " Guidelines " , " Protecting Animals in Film and Television " Since 1940, FOR THE SAFE USE OF ANIMALS IN FILMED MEDIA, is an imposing document, and includes: ---------- --------- AMERICAN HUMANE ASSOCIATION Basic Principles For the Use of Animals in Filmed Media No animal will be killed or injured for the sake of a film production. If an animal must be treated inhumanely to perform, then that animal should not be used. General anesthesia and sedation are high risk procedures and are prohibited for the sole purpose of filmmaking (although allowed for necessary veterinary care). Storytelling needs of producers can be achieved humanely by working with AHA and adhering to AHA's Guidelines. Animals are NOT props! (Even if they are supplied by the props department.) AHA Guidelines apply to all animals used in the production, even if an animal is used as background, or off camera to attract the attention of an animal being filmed. AHA Guidelines prescribe a high standard of care that the film and television production industries have voluntarily agreed to provide to animal performers. This standard is more comprehensive and more compassionate than any state's anti-cruelty laws. AHA will enforce all applicable anti-cruelty laws as necessary. ---------- ----- Unless I am mistaken, these principles apply to American movies or shows made anywhere in the world. In any event, the question is, why has AHA not responded to my questions, my offer to be of help, and most importantly, why hasn't CBS and their Survivor series been taken to task for their blatant disregard for everything but the dollar god they worship? Thank you kindly Roger Gould-King ================================================= dc ;animal ;link AHA Western Regional Office, Film and TV Unit--Los Angeles, CA 15366 Dickens Street Sherman Oaks, CA 91403 Dear Friends, Appended is an article I wrote for my Africa Adieu Digest - an email, illustrated journal dealing with environmental and all flora and flora issues, mainly in Africa. It has an international distribution and is free to rs. I was told today that the CBS Survivor crew are probably in the Masai Mara region of Kenya filming their third Survivor series. The question asked by many is why CBS and this show was not shut down or fined for blatant cruelty to animals - apart from disgusting eating displays for the amusement of sensation-hungry viewers? Is your Organisation represented here in South Africa? If not, why not? We can do with some USA - based clout on issues which are wiping out African wildlife - I am willing to volunteer to get your Organsiation started here if you have overseas representatives - can supply references if you're interested. I am retired, so have the time. thank you kindly with esteem Roger Gould-King
