Macau's entire stock of poultry , believed to number about 20,000

birds, will be slaughtered today following detection of the H5N1 virus.

The virus was found in two samples taken from five geese imported

from

the mainland, the Macau Government Information Bureau said early today.

A spokesman said poultry imports from the mainland would initially be

suspended for one week.

The virus was detected during a routine inspection of local poultry

markets by the Macau Health Bureau on Friday.

The cull will include poultry on the islands of Taipa and Coloane.

Compensation will be paid.
