Guest guest
Please sign the baby monkey petition now on line at: http://www.care2.com/petitions/takeaction/406157929 Here's the background. In 1997 and 1998 around 1,400 monkeys were shipped from the Inquatex firm in Indonesia to the LABS of Virginia company. There were several shipments, some consisting of over 250 monkeys. Several shipments reached O'Hare Airport, Chicago. For details, please check: http://ippl.org/babymonkey2001.html The US Fish and Wildlife Service and Centers for Disease Control did not seize the shipments, despite the fact that at least two contained baby monkeys 3-4 weeks old. Such shipments clearly violated US wildlife regulations. LABS employees visited Indonesia to prepare the shipments and shipping rosters were faxed to the US showing that babies were to be shipped. Pregnant monkeys were also shipped, as well as monkeys claimed to be born in captivity who certainly weren't. One LABS employee, Dr. Patrick Mehlman, mentioned in a report to the home office that LABS' Indonesian monkey supplier had to make donations to " CITES charities " in connection with securing permits for monkey exports. CITES = Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. Despite several apparent violations of US wildlife laws, the investigation by the US Fish and Wildlife Service and review of the case by the US Attorney's Office in Chicago, nobody has been prosecuted. Four years have passed since the first shipment with no indictments. So let's make one more effort to secure justice for the baby monkeys.
