Visit them on-line at: http://www.ippl.org BACKGROUND: The Medan Bird Market in North Sumatra is the largest bird market in Indonesia. Traders sell lnot just birds but primates and other protected species such as the Bengal cat, yellow-crested cockatoo, black-capped lory, Moluccan cockatoo and the sun bear. These beings are sold as pets or butchered for their flesh as a delicacy and their brains and internal organs used for exotic medicines. Please send the following sample letter. Remember to add your name and address (including country) and forward widely. ====================================================================== TO: Mr. Ir. Harsono, Director, PKA (Forestry Department) Gedung Manggala Wanabakti Blok 7 Lt. 7 Jl. Gatot Subroto Jakarta, Indonesia EMail: pka (delphut.cbn.net.id) RE: Protection of Primates, Birds and Endangered Species in Indonesia's Bird Markets Dear Director Harsono: I am concerned at the high volume of protected species traded in Medan Bird Market, and other Bird Markets within Indonesia. I believe this shows the lack of law enforcement for primate, and other endangered species, protection in North Sumatra. Your office should immediately confiscate the protected species that are still traded there. Unfortunately it seems that confiscation programs are rarely conducted by the Forestry Department. As someone who travels to Indonesia on business and pleasure, and who buys Indonesian products, I REQUEST THAT INDONESIA'S BIRD MARKETS BE IMMEDIATELY CLOSED DOWN, and all sales of primates and protected animals BE BANNED AND SELLERS ARRESTED AND IMPRISONED AS MANDATED BY INDONESIAN AND INTERNATIONAL LAW. It is not appropriate in a civilized society that monkeys and other wild, protected beings should be sold for human consumption: it is cruel, unlawful and a danger to the health and safety of residents and visitors alike. I will boycott my travel to your country and my purchase of your country's practice until I hear that your government and your office has stopped this repulsive activity.
