Guest guest
Workshop on Edible Birdnest -The Star 7.4.01. -------------- Only about 10% of the 1 000 odd birdhouses built for edible nest swiftlets nationwide have succeeded in attracting the birds, according to the Malaysian Bird's Nest Merchants Association. Its chairman John Chen said the rest were empty partly because their locations were away from the bird's feeding areas or they were poorly designed. A workshop on the " Commercial Viability of Birdhouses for Edible Nest Swiftlets, " touted as the first of its kind, will be held at Equatorial Hotel, Penang on April 19. Chen said that bird's nest was a lucrative industry as it could fetch RM5 200 kilo and each harvest took about three months involving about 1 000 birds. He said that bird's nest was a delicacy in Hong Kong, Thailand and Singapore and was believed to be good for health. He said that birdhouses were becoming popular, citing the example of Sitiawan which had only six about 10 years ago but now had about 300. Wildlife Department said the department was promoting the industry as it was a good source of income. She said the Science, Technology and Environment Ministry would organise the workshop to familiarise potential builders and birdhouse owners on the industry's legal and statutory requirements. The workshop was also to seek feedback from interested parties on rules to regulate the building of birdhouses. The workshop's technical committee Assoc Prof S.P. Tan said about 400 people were expected to attend the workshop. The registration fee is RM300 per person.
