Guest guest
In December last year, ALIVE(All Life In a Viable Environment)'s investigation led to the exposure of a couple of animal dealers', one in Gifu Prefecture and one in Kumamoto, keeping Japanese macaques without proper permits and selling them to research facilities after capturing them from the wild. On-site investigations of those animal dealer's premises were carried out on suspicion of keeping wild macaques without proper permits but, although both admitted selling caputed macaques to researchers without proper permits, they have been insisting that those on their premises are captive-bred and not caught from the wild. No appropriate steps has been taken by the local authority to prove or disprove that those macaques are indeed captive-bred. We have been pressuring both local governments not to issue any more permits to capture and keep wild Japanese macaques and to come up with more humane alternative methods to keep those macaques from damaging crops, etc as well as getting to the bottom of the whole operation. We just found out that the same animal dealer in Kumamoto, has been granted a permit to capture macaques from the local authority of Nango-cho in Miyazaki Prefecture, which is adjacent to Kumamoto, and has taken back 88 macaques to his facilities. In spite of our urgent request to the Governor of Kumamoto of not issuing permits for keeping those captured macaques to the dealer, permits were issued on the 21st March, which the prefectural government has been unwilling to admit. Now that the permits have been issued, this dealer can openly sell those macaques to animal researchers and he will extend his " business " of capturing macaques in other areas of Japan knowing that permits will be issued for the macaques he captures once he takes them back to his facilities in Kumamoto. What this means is that it will secure an inexpensive supply of macaques for animal researchers and it will very likely result in the increase of the number of research. ALIVE has submitted an appeal to the Governor of Kumamoto urging her to cancel the permits for keeping captured macaques and to complete the investigation on the animal dealer to find out if all the macaques he is now keeping are really captive-bred as he claims they are.
