7 bears escape tourist farm; 1 shot

Yomiuri Shimbun

March 28, 2001

Seven brown bears escaped from Taisetsu Bear Center at the Kitanomori Garden

tourist facility in Kamikawa-cho, Hokkaido, about 11:30 a.m. Monday,

according to police.

Six of them were recaptured by their handlers, but a 5-year-old female,

which weighed about 200 kilograms, was killed an hour later by a local

hunter as it wandered around the facility's grounds and the nearby riverbed.

The farm itself had been closed for the winter, but about 50 tourists in a

nearby restaurant were briefly alarmed by the commotion, police said.
