On the foot and mouth outbreak in Britain, there is a convincing article questioning slaughter as a means of controlling this disease, arguing that it is used because treated pigs are not profitable. 'Sacrifices on the altar of cheap food' by Matthew Fort is in The Observer of 4 March 2001. I found it at this address: http://www.guardian.co.uk/food/Story/0,2763,446205,00.htmlJudith Clarke
