Virus Alert: McAfee Avert Places High Risk Assessment on New Naked Wife Worm

 

W32/Naked@MM - Mass Mailing Worm Deletes Files

 

BEAVERTON, Ore., March 6 /PRNewswire/ -- McAfee AVERT (Anti-Virus Emergency

Response Team), a division of McAfee, a Network Associates, Inc. (Nasdaq: NETA)

business, today assigned a HIGH risk

assessment to the recently discovered W32/Naked@MM, also known as Naked Wife.

Naked Wife is a destructive mass-mailing (@mm) worm that sends copies of itself

to all the e-mail addresses in the infected users' address books. In addition,

Naked Wife deletes files with extensions .BMP, .COM, .DLL, .EXE, and .INI in the

WINDOWS and WINDOWS\SYSTEM directories. It has been found in more than 25

corporations, including Fortune 500 companies.

 

Symptoms

Naked Wife is an Internet worm that once activated, sends itself to

all recipients in the Outlook Address Book and attempts to deletes all

..BMP, .COM, .DLL, .EXE, and .INI files in the WINDOWS and WINDOWS\SYSTEM

directories.

The worm is coded in Visual Basic 6 and compiled as an executable file

named “NakedWife.exe“.
