I received the following letter today from:

Jakarta, 2 March 2001

Dear Sir,

Utilization of Marine Turtles in Bali

Pursuant to your letter dated on Desember 9th, 2000 concerning the above

mentioned matter, we would like to inform you as follows:

1. All the species of sea turtles in Indonesia have been protected based on

the government regulation no.7 1999 concerning Preservation of Fauna and

Flora.

2. No utilization in any form is allowed for species listed in this

protection status, except with special permission from the minister and

under the consent of the scientific authority in very special circumstances.

3. As you may be aware, in Bali the sea turtles are used by the community

only for fulfilling their needs such as for religious ceremony and local

culture.

4. We also would like to clarify that for the period 1991-2000, The Governor

of Bali have enacted regulation through a circular letter concerning

Utilization of Sea Turtle in Bali. This consists of restriction of the

utilization of sea turtle in Bali. However since June 2000 this circular

letter was revoked through The Decree of the Governor of Bali No 243 of

2000, providing that no utilization of sea turtles is allowed in any forms

of activities including religious and local purposes.

5. One of the turtle dealers in Bali is now under trial in Denpasar district

court. The verdict will be taken soon.

6. We are committed to continuously enforce the law and the conservation of

wildlife and any support from the national and international

communities is highly appreciated.
