FWD: (JP) Japanese macaque update

Thanks to those who wrote for Japanese macaques,

neurological and physiological researchers didn't

succeed in securing captured wild macaques as their

research objects.

Despite those researchers' intensive campaign,

Environment Agency refused to change it's guideline as

they also got a lot of pressure from the public both

in and outside Japan;the guideline currently either

encourages nor denies scientific use of captured wild

animals. The existing wildlife protection law cannot

prohibit transfer of captured wild animals to research

facilities but EA's technical manual advises captured

animals' being put to sleep rather than being sent to

research facilities.

And after the recent exposure of animals dealers

illegally keeping captured wild animals (and probably

capturing them without a proper permit), EA will keep

an strict eye on what's happening to captured wild

animals from now on.

We will keep monitoring the local governments of Gifu

and Kumamoto and try to find out the names of other

research facilities those animals dealers have been

supplying wild macaques to.

Thank you again for your help and we wish you the best

for 2001.
