Guest guest
Dear Barbara, Earlier today I asked you to post your website so that I might learn more about your org, but I now seem to recall some information which may or may not apply to you. Anyway, I would appreciate it if you'd take some time to straighten out my confusion..... You wrote: >>Tue, 19 Dec 2000 16:44:00 -0000 " Barbara Healy " <macaques New MemberHello >>My name is Barbara Healy and I am new to the list today. I wanted to introduce myself and say hello to everyone. We have Macaque Sanctuary in MIssissippi and I am the Legislative Director for the International Primate Protection Society ( not to be confused with the INt. Primate Protection " league " ).>> I am familiar with IPPL (founded in 1973), which is opposed to all human abuses of primates, to include the breeding, selling, and keeping of monkeys as pets; yet, from your post I get the impression that your group supports these things(?). You say you are legislative director for IPPS? This is very confusing.... I would appreciate it if you would provide a bit more information so that we can all learn more about your org: Please provide us with a listing of the officers of the " Society " and explain whether any have ever 1) dealt in primates and/or 2) owned primates as pets. If this group in any way aids and abets the monkey pet trade and/or monkey " baby snatching, " it is 100% diametrically opposed in philosophy to IPPL. Maybe some would consider the similarity of name, whether intended or not, confusing. As legislative director of the group, can you explain your group's position on laws pertaining to the primate pet trade. Also, would you clarify if any of the people involved with your group are the same as those who tried to found, or founded, the " Primate Protection League United " a while back and sent the announcement that follows to a pet monkey list? --------- " Primate Protection League United, PPLunited Hi all, We are starting a new group for private primate owners. Our focus is to NOT take away from any other groups but to add and pick up where they leave off. We are forming in Florida and will be also going national and are covering the basis as we go to do this, when the rest of you want to help and maybe form local groups as part of PPLunited. We also hope to join forces with groups like Geo's and work closely with Phoenix. Our goals are not set in concrete but as of now they include, Supporting responsible private primate ownership(all species) Supportive of other primate owners Educate others in the proper care of primates **Protecting our rights to keep primates as pets. **Maintain a " Safe House " for primates that need to be temproarily placed because of sickness, divorce or accidents, bite situations etc. Working to incorporate laws that makes traveling with primates easier. Transport network (organize a transport network) **Logging all legislative information and helping others in need of fighting a ban etc. Our Mission Primate Protection League United - private primate owners concerned with protection of primates in the private sector. Our goals is to utilize all avenues to help protect our rights to own primates and protect the primates in the private sector. Our goals are yet to be laid out in concrete but our focus is safehousing a primate in trouble, group meetings for enrichment and education, logging all information on legislation. Being Proactive in legislative issues. All safehousing will be handled by a private committee within the group and all information will be strictly confidentail and will be handled in a manner that always concentrates on the well-being and health and safety of the animal. All owners rights will be honored/respected and protected at all times, within the safe-house network. We have one attorney that is willing to be part of PPLUnited and we have others interested. More info coming soon!!!! " ---------- >>I am also co-founder and director of The Institute for Captive Primate Care, which was founded for the express purpose of offering excellent medical and loving care for Macaques and other primates that it is difficult to find treatment for in the political climate of today. I am looking forward to sharing information about Asian primates.> Barbara>> Thank you for your time in addressing this confusion.
