Guest guest Posted December 5, 2000 Report Share Posted December 5, 2000 In night of Saturday December 4 - 5, 2000 a gibbon at the GRP gave birth. When our people at the GRP saw the baby in the morning of Sunday 5 December 2000 they noticed that an arm was badly bitten. While removing the baby from the mother for medical treatment she bit the baby on the body. We do not know who bit the arm, the mother or the father. Our vet who is permanently at the GRP had to amputate the arm. The baby was then returned to the mother who did not pick it up. There appears to have been a discussion among some of the volunteers at the GRP as to the next step, remove the baby or let it lie in the cage until it died. Mr. Preecha Sonserm the Project Director wanted to remove the baby and try to save its life. Some of the volunteers didn't agree, for various reasons they thought the baby should be left to die. I spoke to one of them (a biologist) by telephone, he appeared to be the spokesman and I told him that a one-armed gibbon can survive and eventually be released. And the life of the gibbon must be respected, it was already born, why deny it a chance of life for any reason at all. He gave me reasons why the baby should not be saved, I respect his reasons but don't agree with them. The Project Director is going to try and raise the baby and give it a chance at life I'm posting this to the list immediately to keep you all informed. I would appreciate your comments and will pass them to Phuket or you can send them directly to gibbon so that our volunteers can see them. Its difficult for me to understand why anyone could stand by and for any reason at all, allow one of our gibbons to die when there's a chance of saving its life.
