DawnWatch tip: Premarin cruelty report on NBC's Dateline, Sunday,

January 18

Dateline is back on board! The NBC news magazine show has won many Genesis

Awards for terrific animal friendly segments in the past, but has been lying low

on animal issues for the last few years. Here is great news -- I just got the

following note from activist Eilene Cohen about this Sunday's show (January 18):

" After 5 years of relentless perseverance and persistence, Andrea Eastman

finally prevailed and successfully persuaded Dateline to do a great segment on

Premarin. A must watch this Sunday, 7:00pm Eastern Time. It's the lead piece!

Andrea is seen at the end of the segment riding off into the sunset with

Stockard Channing! Congratulations Andrea! "

Dateline tells me that the piece is indeed scheduled to air but that as Dateline

is a news magazine show there are no guarantees -- things can get bumped if

" important " news breaks.

Those not familiar with the cruelty involved in the Premarin (Pregnant Mares'

Urine) industry should check out the United Pegasus Foundation page on the issue

-- that group has been instrumental in the fight to bring the truth to light:

http://www.unitedpegasus.com/premarin2.htm. Another great site on the issue is

the United Animals Nations site: http://www.uan.org/premarin/. Both tell us of

mares who spend months at a time standing in barns strapped to urine collection

devices, and of the Premarin foals, byproducts of the industry, who go to

slaughter.

Premarin was the most prescribed drug in America and the third most prescribed

drug in the world through most of the 1990s. Since studies broke linking Hormone

Replacement Therapy to an increased risk of breast cancer, sales have fallen

dramatically. The Dateline segment airing this Sunday, to be watched by

millions, focusing on health and animal cruelty issues, should play a

significant role in the effort to put a dent in the popularity of the grotesque

substance.

Dateline airs on NBC at 7pm in most American cities -- check your local

listings. Watch the segment if you can, and assuming it airs, (and only if it

airs) please send Dateline a huge thank-you for the expose. Positive feedback

for animal cruelty coverage will encourage similar segments in the future.
