During a visit to the Matt Gonzalez headquarters a couple of weeks ago, I met Colleen Holland, food editor of the San Francisco-based bi-monthly newsletter VegNews, who was coordinating Vegetarian Day for the volunteers. In between tidying up the food tables, she told me that 4,000 VegNews rs had participated in a survey that named Millennium (580 Geary St., near Jones) the number one vegetarian restaurant. The favorite local natural food store was Rainbow Grocery cooperative at 1345 Folsom St. (near 13th), and the favorite spot for a vegan brunch (no dairy, no eggs) was Herbivore (531 Divisadero St., near Fell; and 983 Valencia St., near 21st Street). For all the winners, log on to www.vegnews.com/veggieawards.html. Holland also took me by the hand to an ice cream cart to sample two flavors of non-dairy ice cream from Maggie Mudd, a 9-month-old ice cream parlor at 903 Cortland Ave. (near Folsom) in Bernal Heights. Both were delicious. Michael Juarez owns the business with his wife, Changying Zheng. It appears they're covering all the bases in their tiny 24-seat shop. They make about a third of the traditional ice cream they sell, and all of the soy, almond, coconut milk and hazelnut-based ice creams. The store's big sellers are the non-dairy ice cream cakes for birthday celebrations. Maggie Mudd is open daily.
