BAVRT is NOT a drop-in dinner event. As always, you come under your own liability for all events. Pass the word to your friends. This is not an exclusive net-folks only event. This is not an activist group or singles event. Note that if you plan to attend this dinner, you can order only vegetarian dishes, even if the restaurant serves other stuff. If you have suggestions for future sites, please e-mail them to . If you want to volunteer host a BAVRT dinner, please let me know!! ===================================================================== Contents #1) MeatOut Day #2) This month's trek #3) Last month's trek #4) News Section #5) NON-BAVRT related stuff (feel free to skip) --- #1) MeatOut Day http://www.meatout.org/ It is March and it can mean only one thing - the Great American Meatout day! Of course, the super majority of you do not need this being vegetarians and vegans. Still it is nice to mention this to your friends and colleagues who may not be veg*an. It is held in the first day of Spring (March 20). --- #2) This month's trek Joyce agreed to host this month's restaurant trek. Here is the sumptuous menu she arranged with the restaurant in her own words... ------------- " I have pre-ordered the food, all of which is vegan and served family-style. Here is what I ordered for each group of 4 people: Vegetarian Alicha: Mild curried potatoes, carrots and long beans. Not spicy but one of my favorite dishes. Kantisha: Fresh mushrooms sauteed in tomato sauce, corn oil, onions, tomatoes and luscious Eritrean spices. A national favorite that this place does particularly well. Hilbt: Smooth, tangy dip made of fava beans, onions, tomatoes and fenugreek. Birsin: I believe this is a lentil stew -- I know it's a legume and I know it's delicious, prepared with spices, herbs and onions. Prices are not high at this restaurant. Food costs will run $8 per person, or $10 with tax and tip. Beverages, obviously, are more. " ------------- [ Being unfamiliar with Eritrean food, Joyce provided the following information. ] ------------- " Many people confuse Eritrean food with Ethiopian food, something Eritrean people aren't wild about since they've been in a savage civil war with Ethiopia for decades. Being as the two countries are neighbors their cuisines do share some similarities. Both have many lentil and legume stews, take it easy on the meat, and don't use forks and knives. Instead, they scoop up food with the pancake-like injera bread, a slightly-sour tasting delicious bread. Eritrean food is particularly appropriate for vegan eaters. Though Ethiopians use a lot of clarified butter in their food, Eritreans tend to use oil (often corn) and tomato pastes instead, a trick they learned from Rome, who colonized Eritrea from 1890-1941. Thus almost every vegetarian dish is vegan by default as Eritreans do not eat cheese and only rarely use butter or eggs. Eritrean food is characterized by complex spices, smooth textures, heavy use of legumes and vegetables and its absolute lipsmacking goodness. The man who owns Sawa used to cook at Massawa Restaurant on Haight Street in SF, so diners may remember his food from that restaurant. " ------------- Well what can be added? Very little. Since we have only 20 spots this month, make sure to RSVP soon! With the incredibly inexpensive price and the exotic food, RSVPs are bound to close soon :-( --- #3) Last month's trek http://www.veginfo.com/bavrt/restaurantlist.html Well, last month turned out to be a non-event :-( Last month's host was apparently very busy and contacted the restaurant only a couple of days before the trek. By then, the restaurant could not accommodate the size of our crowd (26 confirmed RSVPs, not including the 11 people who canceled on their own). So dinner was canceled. Just a word to future hosts. Most restaurants need around two or three weeks lead time to accommodate the BAVRT crowd. Please keep this in mind when you are hosting BAVRT dinners. Talking about hosting, BAVRT needs more volunteer hosts for future dinners! Please contact me, if you like to host an event. --- #4) News Section ( If you come across news items, veg or otherwise, in the mainstream media that may be of potential interest to BAVRT members, please forward me the URL. ) a) Report: McDonald's Close to Settling Lawsuit Over Fries http://biz./ap/020309/mcdonald_s_fries_1.html " McDonald's is close to paying more than $12 million to settle lawsuits filed by vegetarians who accused the chain of concealing the use of beef flavoring in its french fries, according to a published report.
