This might not really be the kind of answer you were looking for, but in

relation to whether eating plants is cruel, you should try and dig out a copy of

Supernature by Lyall Watson and read the section on plant communication.

 

Basically, some guy decided to hook a plant up to a lie-detector to measure its

stress levels in different circumstances. Anyway, the upshot is that the plant

showed signs of stress (i.e. perspired more) when someone walked into the room

who had just been incinerating a load of plants in the lab next door. The same

thing didn't happen when someone was eating salad (ok, I'm not sure if the last

bit was in the book, but I'm sure I read it elsewhere).

 

Er.. the point I'm trying to make is that killing plants is ok by them if it's

for a purpose and not just plain nihilistic destruction.

 

I think I'd better stop there....
