Guest guest
ok..since beer, alcohol, and related subjects keep coming up on several of these groups..i decied to natter on fer a bit on this..lucky you!!! hey, where are you going? comeback!!! well, fer those who haven't hit the delete key already, fraggle's subject of the nite is..organic beer... now, i'm not that much of an expert on european beers, but, here in the land of Bush,Cheney, and the magic puppet show, there are a horde of organic beers to be certified organic in the US, the beer has to have a minimum of 95% organic ingredients...until recently, it was very difficult fer brewers to get organic hops. most organic hops were grown in new zealand, but, more organic hop yards are spreading across the US and our frozen neighbor called canada... in europe..hmmm..lets see golden promise was the first certified organic beer released, its from scotland.. pinkus from germany makes an organic alt, pils, and hefeweizen..all yummy...and samuel smiths makes an organic ale and an organic lager... i know there are several more from europe, like a few belgium ones, and a french organic cider, but, me brain is drawing a blank at the moment....and my S.O. hamster(she rescued him, he was destined to be snake fud) is making a whole ton of noise, and i'll blame him for distracting me, and not lettin me think properly in the states, we have a lot of organic brands, mostly on the west coast..some are certified organic(oregon tilth or california COF), some aren't...(it costs a ton to get certified, so some brewers make organic beer and just call it natural er some such to save on $$$ and paperwork).. lets see here....ummm.. wolavers is the most famous i can think of..there brown, pale, IPA and cider are all organic..and, they are contracted out to 4 breweries across the nation, so, they should be found in many different places..lus, ten percent of profits go to organizations promoting susatintable agriculture! Eel rivver up in fortuna (Ca)makes a amner and porter.. Ukiah brewing up in ukiah(also california) is 100% organic, and has a brewpub were they serve organic foods... Butte Creek in chico(home of sierra nevada brewing) has 3 organic beers..ale porter and IPA...... mad river up in blue lake(part of the steehead brewery group) is a special case..they only have organic beer that i know of, a barleywine(yum!), but, they win awards every year for there environmental friendliness...they produce something like less then 1% waste...old yeast and grains go to fertilize farmers fields..the grains are also used in breadbaking..the wastewater is pumped thru a greenhouse where it nourishes plants, and, uses wind power to generate energy....kewl! north coast and mendocino both make organic beers Humes use to make a delicious beer called cavedale ale, but, they went belly up last year. and, little truckee brewing up in the sierra along I-80 make s tahoe organic amber, which appears from time to time up in oregon, spencer's makes mckenzie butte pale.. Hawks has a line of beers it calls Supernaturals Wild Duck was making an organic hemp ale called Rasta, but, with the change in the federal laws, i'm sure it has vanished.... caldera in ashland(which we searched 3 hours for and never found one day) has an organic pale ale.. Both Rogue and Full Sail have experimented with organic beers Laurelwood Brewpub has a line of Free Range ales BigHorseBrewpub made an organic heather ale with the Alameda Brewhouse...they wanted to make it as tradtional as possible, and since its pretty damn unlikely the picts used paraquot or malathaion, they went organic.... and..washington...washington, the other state in the nation of cascadia(sorry, only pacific northwesterners will get that one) has the Fish brewery(which makes the pretty pint glass i happen to be drinking out of at the moment) has several organic beers, and a portion of the profits for its Wild Salmon pale ale go the the Save our ewild salmon group...and, they also support other enviro groups... Elysian up in seattle( i adore this brewery...carrie might get me to move to seattle by constantly dangling this place in front of me..)has some seasonal organics, as does Elliot Bay(also in seattle) i know there a bunch of organic beers up in Canada, such as Crannog, and Natureland lager, but, my brain is farting at the moment, and can't think str8... as fer the rest of the nation...ummm...new belgium in colorado made an organic ale i had once...i'm pretty sure there are a few organic beers on the east coast fer more info, go to...hmm..let me find that link...crap..can't find it..well, just look for Bioriginal on a search engine..and the other link is www.diamondorganics.com well...if ya drink...try and track down some of these beers and breweries and support organics!! cheers! fraggle *hops away*
