Apparently they can be, if you feed them food that has the chemicals added that they need. Cats go blind and then die from heart problems caused by lack of taurine in their diets. Synthesized taurine is available now. As far as I know there is no natural vegetarian diet you can feed your cat and keep it healthy, because of the need for taurine.
