(not saying I agree, just being a bit of a devils >advocate to see what others think) I suppose that it is better than wasting food. But if it were me, I'd leave anything that wasn't vegan to the birds. This brings me onto a story which I can't remember if I 've mentioned already or not, so I do apologise in advance if I have. But a few months ago, there were 5 'pet' chickens kept by the farmer [it's just their eggs that were stolen!]. During the day the chickens pleased themselves, at night they were put in a hut, a very badly made one at that, lots of gaps for predators to get into! [another one of those unfinished jobs!] So, when a wandering mink got a whiff of the chickens, well...you can guess what happened! So, the remaining 4 were to be made into soup. Farmer left the task of preparing them to my colleagues because he was too busy to do it himself. But everyone kept putting it off. I couldn't stand the thought of them being wasted, so I volunteered to pluck them if I could wear gloves and someone else boiled them. [everyone was extemely shocked at me!] Not a job I would normally volunteer to do, but I thought at least they won't just be left to rot. It ended up that no-one could actually face doing it. What really annoyed me was that one of my colleagues went out to the supermarket and bought a chicken! I asked why she had bought that one when there were already some here. She said it was because she didn't 'know' the one from the supermarket! I wondered what the hell the difference was! For all she knew the one covered in cellophane could once have had as much character and personality as the ones we 'knew'. But they were all the same now-dead. And the ones that weren't killed for profit, were wasted, which is sad. Obviously, I couldn't bring myself to eat them, but you can see why I'd get annoyed at the fact they were not eaten by the people who usually eat meat anyway! It's funny that most of them wouldn't eat the 'freshly minced lamb' either. Again, I think a lot more people would give up meat if they were to see the animal they are going to eat before it is killed. >BTW, I think a better answer would be to ensure that ALL the food at >such a gathering is suitable for vegans, by and large everybody can >eat vegan food, so it's the lowest common denominator. An omnivorous >friend of mine always cooks vegan for gatherings because he knows >EVERYONE can eat it and there's no fuss about laying on seperate food >for vegans/veggies/omni's etc- less hassle all round. Wish some omnivorous friends of mine were like that! That sounds like a good idea and very considerate. Unfortunately, it can be hard to convince some of my 'die hard carnivorous' friends that it is possible to eat anything other than the usual boring chunks of meat at a barbeque, and to use our imaginations and come up with some wonderful, interesting veggie ideas instead. They'd never agree to it, but that's because I'd be in the minority. They would probably see that suggestion as me trying to force my beleifs on them. However, if they come to my house I have everything vegan. But even though I tell them not to bring anything, and I'll organise it, there is always someone who brings ham sandwiches or cheesey dips, etc. which usually ends up trailing all over my vegan dishes! [sigh] It's as if they are convinced they'll get ill or not feel truly satisfied if they don't consume animal products for a few hours. I'm glad I have recently got to know some fellow vegans!!!
