I know they have a fab canoe club - which all old boys and girls as well as new

ones go down to Sennen in cornwall first may bank hols every year. They go down

with the climbers which is also supposed to be a fab gang!

Brum is a fab city and has some good places to eat but aren't particularly vegan

focused. They do have a few great indians and a Belle Pasta though

Let me know if you go to Sennen, I'm part of the extended gang that tags along -

though I have never been to Sennen, don't canoe and the most difficult thing I

climb is the stairs!

It was me that went to Aston.... you'll have a great time there!

They don't have any veg/vegan soc like a lot of places. An animal

rights society started during my final year there, but I didn't get

round to going to have a chat to them to see what they did. Its

still around as far as I know though. Also a GreenSoc (or

something), not sure what they did or if they're still around! I

think societies fair is the first sunday in October.... it was last

year cos I was there helping out.

Places to eat are a bit restricted.... Warehouse Cafe on Allison

Street, Digbeth is less than 10 mins walk away - run by Friends of

the Earth. As far as I could work out after much questioning Royals

in Corporation Street (other side of the ring road to Stafford Tower)

was OK. Don't go to Manzils... people from Aston seem to have this

inexplicable urge to go there - the food looks (probably is) and

tastes like it has come out of a bucket, and it is not a particularly

celibrious institution - they were banned from doing curry night in

the Student Guild after giving some customers a kicking!!

There is a vegetarian curry restaurant at Five Ways (top of Broad

Street) - but I've not been to sample it yet, doesn't seem

unreasonable to suggest it should be OK with vegans.

Student Guild is fairly crap for veg / vegan food. Sandwich type

place in the " Blue Room " (used to be called Monks, but changed name

after an encounter with a blue tin of paint) actually did vegan

baguettes.

Climbers are indeed a fab gang.... my housemate is one of them!!

They seem to go all over the place - over summer they went to

northern Italy for a couple of weeks, Cornwall (as mentioned),

Cheshire, Staffs, and, er, lots of places. They go climbing at the

indoor climbing centre most weeks, which is just behind the

university.

Er, other things to know. Don't know really. Shopping - bull ring

veg market is worth a look - it is actually there behind all the

building site!! Don't go to Asda in Perry Barr cos to get the bus

back means a choice of the subway under Birchfield Road - which is

dodgy as hell (I was once chased by a nutter down there!), or taking

a detour to cross at surface level by walking the wrong side of some

railings. There is a 24 hour Tesco at Five Ways which is pretty good

and you can get there on the #66 bus from Aston Street (road through

campus)

Can't think of much else.

If you want to know anything else let us know!
