Straight edge question

Okay, I am pretty ignorant, and realise that this might annoy the straight

edgers out there but I don't know what the philosophy behind it is - are

there any good introductions you can recommend? I just have a vague idea of

teetotal, kind of intense right-wing-ish philosophy from what I've seen in

my trawling through the net.

Well, as far as I know, the straight edge thing was first coined by Ian

McKay...think thats how its spelt...lead singer of american undergound vegan

punk band fugazi ( he was previously in Black Flag with Henry Rollins

)....it was then taken up by disenchanted youth all over the world...I`ve

known quite a few straight edge people, long before I became vegan(several

of whom I suspect are probably wearing suits now and sitting in

burgerking)......at the time I was an Acid sucking, Skunk puffin`

carnivore....I always thought the straight edge thing took itself a bit too

seriously...but the ethos is about self empowerment, and more importantly

the non-reliance on unnessesary things that keep you distracted...I have no

doubt that alcohol, tobacco, drugs can be seen as obsticles on the path of

self righteousness....but In retrospect, I don`t know that if I hadn`t had

the intense experiences I had on drugs that I would have questioned my self

rigerously enough to change.

To me...straight edge is probably something best done AFTER you have tried

all the things that you disagree with....otherwise you don`t know what your

talking about..

pick up some fugazi on napster before the capitalists kill it!!

a good starting point would be the song " shut the door "

good luck...and have a drink on me!!
