This item is from: Walter Clarke essexsierra_pr

essexsierra_pr AT verizon.net

Please contact him about it not me.

Before you read Walter Clarke's post I should share a thought or two

of my own on it. I used to be very impressed by Al Gore. I share

his views on the Greenhouse Effect but I do not believe that he goes

far enough. Animals, like humans, consume oxygen and produce

Greenhouse Gases like carbon dioxide, methane,

nitrous oxide, etc. Read the United Nations Food & Agriculture

Organization FAO report on livestock's footprint and the Greenhouse

Effect. Al Gore should, as PETA, a group I differ with on many

issues, but not this one: should become a vegan, a total vegetarian,

eating no animal products. If Al Gore did that he would really be

walking the talk.

Beyond this horrid flaw of omission, regarding veganism, total

vegetarianism, the film is flawed in another way. Gore says in the

film that there are other things to do in addition to fighting

terrorism.

Most, not all, but most, terrorism is funded by some member states

of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, OPEC. The more

petroleum based products you use, whether for your car, or for your

diet, the more you contribute to the funding of terrorism. It is not

only the consumption of the dope sold by terrorists which

contributes to terrorism. And yes, you should stop using dope if you

are using it to help fight terrorism, and to help your mind and body

and the rest of the universe for that matter. Hedonism is not good

for you or for any living being.

To get a pound of steak protein on your plate 21 pounds of feed

grain protein: corn, oats, barley, soy, wheat, etc. etc. etc. are

used to fatten that castrated bull called a steer that you eat.

On average it takes about 8 to 10 pounds of feed protein fed to so

called food animals to get 1 pound of animal protein on your plate.

Lots of that is very high energy intensive production using lots of

petroleum based fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, etc. Not to

mention vast quantities of water used by the animals and used to

irrigate the crops fed to animals. The USA feeds almost all of the

the soybeans corn oats and barley it grows to animals rather than to

hungry people.

Food animals are competitors with humans for oxygen, water, land,

energy, and life itself.

40% of the world's oxygen is produced by the tiny plant plankton

called phytoplantkon in the oceans.

These phytoplantkton live with krill, a fish plankton,in a very

fragile ecosystem. These days krill are being used as animal feed

and pet food.

As the krill vanish so will the phytoplankton that produce 40% of

earth's oxygen.

The phytoplankton are also jeapordized by increased solar

ultraviolet radiation breaking through the holes in the ozone layer

above the poles.

It is estimated that there will be no more fish in the seas by the

middle of this century c.e.

Those who want to save energy should consider this, it takes about

77 calories of energy input to get the food energy a CAN of corn

will give you. That same amount of food energy from steak would

require 21,000 calories of energy input.

If anyone knows how to reach Al Gore, or any other enviornmentally

concerned people, be they Presidential candidates, or not, please

reach out to them about how important it is to stop eating animals

and animal products if they really want to to consistent about being

advocates for our environment and the survival of life on our

fragile small planet.

In fact Frances Moore Lappe's 1970s book, DIET FOR A SMALL PLANET,

ought to be required reading for every environmentalist and

Presidential candidate. If you can get hold of it, or other pro-

vegetarian material send it to every enviornmentalist and

Presidential candidate you can think of, from Al Gore on down or up

as the case may be.

we are trying to create a veggie world.

That means of course getting more people to become aware of the need

to go veggie.

And what about the veggies who are out there already?

Well I want to tell you a personal story about that. My late father

was a veggie when he was younger, but he married a carnivore. As a

result I was raised as a carnivore, though I can recall my late

father eating vegetable plates at diners we would go to so he could

get them and eating vegetarian Chinese food at Chinese restuarants

we would go to so he could get that food. At long last he finally

gave up and ended his vegetarianism.

Though he lived to what some consider to be " a ripe old age " I am

convinced that had he remained a veggie he would still be alive. He

has been dead for some years now.

What all of that means of course is that we need to make sure that

veggies marry veggies and that they raise their children as veggies.

So the need for single veggie organizations is enormous.

NJSingleVegetarians/

Subscribe: NJSingleVegetarians-

It was certainly good fortune that I became a veggie myself quite

awhile ago but many children of these so-called " veg/carnivore "

or " mixed-marriages " are not quite so lucky and end up as non-

veggies.

I am also of course promoting the veggie way of life to others who

are not yet veggies.

One key group to promote the veggie way of life to is science

fiction fans. Why science fiction fans? Well because some science

fiction fans actually become science fiction writers.

Why science fiction writers then? Well because the way of life that

we take for granted here in the so-called " first world " , of

industrialized nations is a way of life that not so long ago

was considered to be science fiction. It was a science fiction

writer: Arthur C. Clarke, who

came up with the idea of communications satellites as a science

fiction idea.

Well they are fiction no more. Nor are communications devices that

do not require wires.

Remember the " communicators " on StarTrek? Chances are you have a

cell phone in your pocket or in your car, or if you don't you know

more than one person who does.

Once again, fiction no more. Fact.

The science fiction fan of today is the science fiction writer of

tomorrow.

The science fiction story or idea of today is the fact of tomorrow,

just as yesterday's science fiction stories and ideas are the facts

of today.

Another place I am helping to promote the veggie way of life is in

the Jewish community.

I happen to be Jewish and would want nothing but the best way of

life there is for my fellow Jews. Eating animals is not only not

good for the animals who are murdered for food, it is not good for

the humans who eat them.

Being veggie is also very much in the interests of the Jewish

community around the world.

Producing a pound of steak " protein " on the plate requires up to 21

pounds of so-called

" feed " protein from things like the 42% of American wheat

production, the 86% of American corn, oats and barley production,

the 90% of non-exported soybean production, that goes into the

creation of that pound of steak " protein " on the plate of the

American animal eater.

Producing all of that so-called " feed " requires a lot of energy.

More energy is used

as petro-chemical based fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides, etc.

as well as in the transportation of that so-called " feed " , and of

the animals themselves, in the disposal of their wastes, in the

movement of water to irrigate those crops and to " water " those

animals.

Many of the energy sources involved are nations around the world

that supply arms to terrorists who slaughter Jews in Israel and

around the world, as well as other innocents, such as those who were

slaughtered on September 11th. 2001.

So I am promoting Jewish singles events at veggie establishments to

bring the fact of being able to have a veggie meal as a reality to

my fellow Jews.

I do so periodically at Veggie Heaven, a Kosher Vegan Chinese

Restaurant with several locations here in New Jersey. I hope that

similar restaurants exist elsewhere that may serve as event

locations. Failing that I hope that vegan house parties can be

arranged everywhere.

If you are Jewish yourself I hope that you will do the same wherever

you may be.

If you are able to come to some of these events I hope that you will

do so.

If you live to far away to get to them by all means create them.

Create them for your fellow Jews if you are Jewish.

Create them for your fellow veggies if you are veggie.

Create them for science fiction fans if you want to see science

fiction fans become veggie and science fiction ideas created by

veggie science fiction writers, all of whom start off as science

fiction fans creating the new facts of life on earth as ones which

will make it possible for a veggie world to in fact come into being.

Our Jewish singles groups are designed to increase the Jewish

population by

bringing single Jews together in the hope that marriages, and

children who will be raised

as Jews ,will result from bringing single Jews together.

We cannot ignore the real threat to Jewish survival posed by

intermarriage, which usually

results in the children of such marriages being raised as non-Jews.

Another real threat to Jewish survival in these times is the fact

that

in these times for one reason or another some people are no longer

heterosexual.

Any Jew who is no longer heterosexual is of course much less likely

to marry a Jew of the opposite sex and to have children with that

person.

We need every single Jew who can do so to marry another single Jew

and to have children as a result of those marriages who will be

raised as Jews.

It is with great joy that we can report that there are resources

available to deal with the situation some Jews who are no longer

heterosexual find themselves in.

One such resource is http://jonahweb.org/

" JONAH is a non-profit international organization dedicated to

educating the world-wide Jewish community about the prevention,

intervention, and healing of the underlying issues causing same-sex

attractions. If you are confused by same-sex attractions or know

someone who is and desire help, please contact us for resources and

" ZOA: Mahmoud Abbas Is No Moderate & Deserves No Support

June 18, 2007

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact: Morton A. Klein, 212-481-1500

The Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) is opposing any Israeli and

American support for Palestinian Authority (PA) president Mahmoud

Abbas' Fatah terrorist group. ( Jerusalem Post, June 17, 2007).

Mahmoud Abbas in his own words:

On recognizing Israel: " It is not required of Hamas, or of Fatah, or

of the Popular Front to recognize Israel " (Al-Arabiya [Dubai] and PA

TV, October 3, 2006).

Fighting Israel: " We have a legitimate right to direct our guns

against Israeli occupation ... Our rifles, all our rifles are aimed

at The Occupation " ( Jerusalem Post, January 11, 2007; Independent

Media & Review Analysis, January 12, 2007).

On Jews: " The sons of Israel are corrupting humanity on earth " (

World Net Daily, January 11, 2007).

On Israel: " the Zionist enemy " (Associated Press, January 4, 2005;

CNN.com, January 7, 2005).

On suicide bombers: " Allah loves the martyr " ( Wall Street Journal,

January 5, 2005).

On wanted Palestinian terrorists: " heroes fighting for freedom " ( Age

[Melbourne], January 3, 2005); " Israel calls them murderers, we call

them strugglers " (Jerusalem Post, December 25, 2004).

On Palestinian terrorist leaders Yasser Arafat, Hamas' Ahmad Yasin

and Abdel Aziz Rantisi and Palestinian Islamic Jihad's Fathi

Shikaki: " martyrs " (Palestinian Media Center , September 9, 2005)

On Hamas: " We must unite the Hamas and Fatah blood in the struggle

against Israel as we did at the beginning of the intifada. We want a

political partnership with Hamas " ( Jerusalem Post, February 5, 2007).

On Yasser Arafat: " It is our duty to implement the principles of

Yasser Arafat " ( Haaretz, January 3, 2005); " We will continue in the

path of the late president until we fulfill all his dreams " (Agence

France-Presse, November 11, 2005); " The Palestinian leadership won't

stray from Arafat's path " (Yediot Ahronot, November 11, 2006)

On disarming Palestinian terrorists: a " red line " that must not be

crossed (Washington Times, January 3, 2005)/LI>

On jailed Palestinian terrorists: " our heroes. " (Israel National

News, May 26, 2006).

On the so-called `right of return' of Palestinian refugees and their

millions of descendants which, if implemented would end Israel as a

Jewish state: " The issue of the refugees is non-negotiable " (

Jerusalem Post, January 11, 2007).

On the Lebanese terrorist group Hizballah: A source of pride and sets

an example for the " Arab resistance " (Jerusalem Post, August 6, 2006).

Saddam Hussein: " Saddam Hussein has entered history as a symbol of

Pan-Arab nationalism " (Independent Media Review and Analysis ,

December 31, 2006).

Mahmoud Abbas' acts:

Holocaust denial: He wrote a PhD thesis and published a book denying

the Holocaust.

Terrorist group Fatah: He co-founded with arch-terrorist Yasser

Arafat the terrorist group Fatah, whose Constitution to this day

calls for the destruction of Israel (Article 12) and the use of

terrorism against Israelis as an indispensable part of the struggle

to achieve that goal (Article 19).

Funding terrorism: as senior PLO official, he funded the Munich

massacre of Israeli Olympic athletes in 1972.

Terror & incitement to violence: He has refused to implement the

signed Oslo agreements and the 2003 Roadmap peace plan which requires

him to fight, arrest, extradite and jail terrorists and confiscate

their weaponry and end the incitement to hatred and murder in the PA-

controlled media, mosques, schools and youth camps that feeds it.

Terrorists' plan for more violence: In May 2006, he endorsed the so-

called `Prisoners' Plan', a document produced by jailed Palestinian

terrorists, that endorses continued terrorism against Israel,

legitimizes the murder of Jews, does not accept Israel's existence as

a Jewish state, abrogates Palestinian obligations under the signed

Oslo agreements and the 2003 Roadmap peace plan, and insists on

the `right of return.'

Money for suicide bombers' families : In December 2005, he approved

legislation mandating financial benefits to be paid to families of

killed Palestinian terrorists.

Mecca Agreement: In March 2007, he formed a unity government with

Hamas under the Mecca Agreement that called for more violence, not

peace and reconciliation with Israel.

Despite this record, Israel and the U.S. are describing Abbas as a

moderate and a peacemaker they intend to support. Prime Minister

Olmert, en route to the U.S. to meet with President Bush, said that

he saw " an opportunity that has not existed for a long time " now that

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas had dissolved his unity

government with Hamas. The U.S. has indicated that it intends to

continue funding, arming and training the forces of Mahmoud Abbas'

Fatah. The State Department spokesman, Sean McCormack said that the

role of American Lt.-Gen. Keith Dayton, who was in charge of American

training and bolstering of the Fatah forces that were overrun by

Hamas in Gaza, will be reevaluated in the coming weeks. " In the days

and weeks ahead we're going to take a look at that to see how to

proceed with the security assistance program, how Keith Dayton is

going to continue working with the Palestinians ... I believe that he

has every intention and that we have every intention of his

continuing his work with the Palestinians. " A U.S. diplomat said that

he expected the 15-month-old foreign aid embargo on the PA to be

lifted once Abbas appointed an emergency government without Hamas (

Jerusalem Post, June 17, 2007). The Middle East Quartet (United

States, European Union, United Nations and Russia) has also issued a

statement of support for Abbas and his decision over the weekend to

dissolve the PA unity government ( State Department, June 16).

ZOA National President Morton A. Klein said, " It is incomprehensible

that President Bush and Prime Minister Olmert would even consider

referring to Abbas as a peacemaker and working towards supporting,

funding and arming him when he has done precisely nothing to fulfill

Palestinian Arab commitments under the signed Oslo agreements and the

2003 Roadmap peace plan. He has not jailed terrorists, confiscated

illegal weapons, or closed the bomb factories. He has not ended the

incitement to hatred and murder in the PA-controlled media, mosques,

schools and youth camps that feed terrorism. This should not be

surprising, since his own Fatah, especially the Al Aqsa Martyrs

Brigades, are just as much involved in suicide bombing and other acts

of terrorism as Hamas, the Popular Front, the Popular Resistance

Committees and other Palestinian Arab terrorism groups. Both Fatah

and Hamas have each murdered nearly 500 Israelis in nearly 7 years of

suicide bombing and terrorism.

" Despite this, the Bush Administration and the Olmert government act

as though Abbas and Fatah were moderates who should be strengthened

and with whom peace negotiations are desirable. The impression is

given that Abbas' dissolving of the PA unity government with Hamas is

somehow an opportunity for peace-making. This is a terrible mistake.

It is vital that the United States and Israel cease the policy of

funding, arming and diplomatically supporting Abbas and Fatah, which

has ensured that the PA remains an unreformed terrorist regime. It is

after Abbas and Fatah who retain control over the content of

Palestinian textbooks and the media, both of which promote hatred of

Jews, Israel, Christians and America. The U.S. and Israel are making

the same mistake they made when they falsely stated that Yasser

Arafat was a moderate peacemaker, and on that false premise made

concessions to his Fatah regime which resulted in a surge of

terrorism and placed Israel in greater danger.

" Also exposed again is, Mahmoud Abbas' real attitude towards

terrorism against Israeli civilians. It has been reported that Abbas

has rejected an offer by the Arab League Secretary-General, Amr

Moussa, to negotiate with Hamas' Khaled Meshaal. A spokesman for

Abbas has actually called Hamas `murderers' and Abbas aide Yasser

Abed Rabbo was also quoted as describing Hamas as `killers' (

Jerusalem Post, June 19, 2007). Yet, whenever Hamas murdered

Israelis, he never referred to them as killers. Until now, Abbas did

not lift a finger to stop terrorism against Israelis. On the

contrary, he previously praised terrorists wanted by Israel

as `heroes fighting for freedom,' stated that `Israel calls them

murderers, we call them strugglers.' Abbas also described Hamas

terrorist chieftain Sheikh Ahmad Yasin as a `martyr.' So much for

Abbas condemning terrorism and working to end it.

" Now, however, when he himself is under attack from Hamas, Abbas can

suddenly reject dealing with Hamas, authorize Fatah to fight Hamas

with full force and describe them as `murderers.' The conclusion is

obvious: Palestinian Arabs who murder Jews are not terrorists so far

as Mahmoud Abbas is concerned. It seems that when Hamas kills Jews,

that's acceptable. It only when Hamas kills Arabs that it becomes a

problem.

" Mahmoud Abbas got himself into this situation of empowering Hamas

and legitimizing it by forming a unity government with it. It is not

the responsibility of Israel, the United States or anyone else to

save him and his forces now that Hamas has decided to take over Gaza.

Abbas has done nothing to merit our support. It is vital that we do

not decide at this moment to continue faster in the same wrong

direction of trying further to empower Abbas. Until and unless Abbas

take steps to fulfill all Palestinian obligations under the Oslo

Agreements, there should be neither diplomatic, financial or military

support nor other rewards and concessions for Abbas and the PA. "

Wants you! Our Science Fiction group is for everyone 21 or older

regardless of background or marital status. Younger fans should find

another group. Please introduce yourself when you join and

periodically as

new members keep joining. We plan to get together at restaurants and

to go

to movies. We will see them in movie theaters, and, if people are kind

enough, on people's home VCRs, or DVD

players, for the technologically advanced among us. Buy your own

movie

tickets. Buy your own meals at

Restaurants. Hopefully a typical event would involve going to a

Science

Fiction Movie and then to a Restaurant to discuss the movie we just

saw.

Are you a single Science Fiction fan looking for a soulmate? Perhaps

you

will find that person here. This club is not a New Jersey singles

group per se,

and is open to anyone over 21, regardless of background or marital

status,

nonetheless, love is a

good thing. In the parts of New Jersey where the

science fiction clubs we know of operate there is also a

very high percentage of Jewish residents. Many science fiction fans

and

science fiction writers and even science fiction stars, like Leonard

Nimoy,

(Mr. Spock), of Star Trek, and William Shatner (Captain Kirk), of

Star

Trek, also happen to be Jewish. Most science fiction fans I know are

single

men, and many of them, at least in places like New Jersey, are

Jewish.

Many science fiction fans in New Jersey also happen to be Jewish.

Most

science fiction fans are male. For the single Jewish woman in New

Jersey

joining a science fiction group may be the ideal way to find her

ideal man.

Unlike most singles events, which tend to be attended by more women

than

men, most science fiction events are attended by more men than women.

c-span, also known as C-SPAN provides much valuable information.

However, we are

distressed that programs like

Washington Journal on c-span seem to provide a forum for

anti-Semites and enemies of Israel and the Jewish people in

general who seem to not only call into that t.v. show, but get

through, and get

on the air, where they are seldom interupted or cut off by the show's

moderators. We feel that a 2 minute delay could enable the show's

moderators to

screen out the anti-Semites and enemies of Israel and the Jewish

people, however

no such 2 minute delay seems to be in place. Moreover the moderators

of that

show and others do not seem to be of a mind to cut off the anti-

Semites and

other enemies of Israel and the Jewish people in general who

regularly call into

that show and others

on c-span. We have therefore created this in the hopes

that members

regularly to

Washington Journal and other c-span call in t.v. shows, to support

Israel and

as Jews. Because there is a hole in our calendar from Friday night

to Saturday night during which many single Jews go to non-Jewish

singles events, meet non-Jews, marry non-Jews, and have children

from those marriages who are not raised as Jews, the Jewish people

faces a very severe problem. We urge everyone who reads this to

contact his or her Rabbi and demand that his or her Rabbi hold

regular Jewish singles Onegs on Friday nights.

We feel that it is vitally important that single Jews go to Jewish

singles events and meet other Jewish singles at those events.

If you know anyone who happens to be Jewish who is hosting a

singles event please ask him or her to consider hosting events just

for Jewish singles.

We also offer the opportunity at our on line Jewish singles groups

to post your Jewish singles introductions and to respond to other

Jewish singles introductions.

Please do so regularly. Please state that you are Jewish, single and

WOMEN FOR ISRAEL'S TOMORROW

WOMEN IN GREEN

WHO WE ARE

Women for Israel's Tomorrow (Women in Green) is a rapidly growing

grassroots women's movement -- grandmothers, mothers, wives, and

daughters; housewives and professionals; secular and religious -- all

bound together by a shared love, devotion and concern for Israel. We

are not affiliated with, nor do we support, any particular political

party. We have chapters throughout Israel and abroad, including Los

Angeles, New York, Chicago and Toronto. We also have many men among

our supporters.

In existence only since late 1993, the Women for Israel's Tomorrow, a

registered non-profit organization, has accomplished a great deal. In

addition to weekly street theater and public demonstrations, we write

weekly articles, commission posters, advertise in newspapers, and

lecture to groups in order to educate the electorate on the

consequences of certain government policies, such as abandoning the

Golan Heights for an illusory promise of peace, and pandering to

Arafat, without requiring him to live up to his obligations under the

Oslo Accords. We insist that Israel remain a Jewish state. We are

actively and intimately connected with the fight to preserve a united

Jerusalem. We support and encourage the brave Jewish community in the

ancient city of Hebron, and sponsor annual Hanukkah and Purim parties

with gifts and professional entertainment for the isolated Jewish

children in that community.

Our movement is dedicated to the security and Jewish heritage of

historic Israel, and we are outspoken in support of our cause. We are

popularly known as the " Women in Green " because of the green hats we

wear.

A leading Hebrew newspaper, Maariv, has described us as " the most

authentic and exciting popular resistance movement to have arisen

here (in Israel) in the last few years " .

Letter from Ruth and Nadia Matar (Women in Green) Jerusalem

Sunday, June 10, 2007

The following article appeared today in the Jerusalem Post.

Sign an online petition against the planned closure at: www.jpost.com.

`Post' readers demand English news be saved

Axing IBA news branded `madness, tantamount to national suicide'

• Crucial meeting tomorrow • Readers worldwide sign `Post' on-line

petition

• Jerusalem Post staff

Howls of protest, outrage and disbelief from Jerusalem Post readers

around the world have greeted the threat of the imminent closure of

the Israel Broadcasting Authority's English-language TV and radio

news broadcasts.

Ahead of a meeting of the IBA's Management Committee on Monday, at

which almost all foreign language news broadcasts are facing the axe,

Post readers have written in from Israel, across Europe, the US,

South Africa, Australia, Asia and beyond to urge the IBA to

reconsider.

Far from halting the broadcasts, many writers urged, the government

should be expanding them as a means of getting Israel's message

across.

" Shooting yourselves in the foot, " " madness " and " tantamount to

national suicide " are some of the more succinct readers' criticisms

of the planned move, which is being mooted because of financial

pressures at the state broadcaster.

Threats have been issued in years past to close down English news -

which broadcasts three local and one global radio broadcasts and a

daily TV news show - and a dozen other foreign language news

services, only for last-minute reprieves to save the services. But

staffing at these services has been relentlessly cut over the past

two years - from 25 staffers to seven, for instance, in the English

radio department. And insiders fear there may be no reprieve this

time, or that further cuts would stretch the foreign language

departments past the breaking point.

Hebrew and Arabic news broadcasts are not under threat, but

broadcasts in other languages, including Russian, French, Spanish and

Amharic, are similarly facing the axe.

Further adding to the insiders' concern is the sense that the IBA's

management is too weak to stand up to the pressure to cut costs, and

the fact that the IBA does not have a minister in government to look

after its interests. Labor's Eitan Cabel, who held that

responsibility, resigned following publication of the Winograd

Committee's interim report.

Set against this, a spokeswoman for Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, who

is also acting finance minister, has promised that he will look into

the matter. In 2000, Olmert, then the minister responsible for the

IBA, pledged to ensure that the English news services were

maintained. The IBA is also required by law to maintain foreign

language broadcasts.

In a September 2000 letter, Olmert told the Post, " I have spoken to

the director of the Broadcasting Authority about this issue and have

given him a directive that there is no place for a further change in

the programming of the English news broadcast. I am aware of the

importance of the English news broadcast for the English-speaking

population in Israel and its significant listening audience. "

Ironically, the insiders said, Israel Radio's various services are

profitable, while its TV services are not - yet it is the radio,

rather than TV, that is set to bear the brunt of the new cuts.

In comments to the Post, one writer asserted that the IBA's

broadcasts were no less valuable than the American jet fighters

Israel buys for tens of millions of dollars.

In a similar vein, with added cynicism, another said, of the

government: " They caused the army to lose the battle on the 'ground'

last year. Why not lose the 'air' this year? "

A writer from Chile said that while " guns are essential to defend

Israel, " it also has to " win the war of ideas. In this, the English

voice of IBA is essential. "

" Not only will Israel lose the possibility to defend itself against

the slanders that abound in English-speaking and Arab-controlled

media, " added a reader from Poland, " but it will cut off its friends

in Europe, USA and elsewhere in the world from an essential source of

unbiased information on the Middle East. "

The planned closure " comes only a few months after Al-Jazeera's 24/7

English programming became available for free through its Internet

site, " noted another Post protester. " Without an English IBA

broadcast, pro-Arab images and spin will monopolize the projection of

local Mideast news into English-speaking countries. Israel cannot

afford any more stupid PR moves like this. "

" What is the government of Israel thinking? " asked one correspondent

from the US. " I listen to IBA on the Internet every single day. It's

the only way I get the real news from Israel. Not only that, the

syndicated Middle East English broadcast Mosaic, on Link TV, features

news from several Arab countries and broadcasts from Al-Jazeera and

Al-Arabiya. If IBA were not on with those broadcasts, only the Arab

view would be presented. "

A reader in South Africa echoed the theme: " The move to cancel this

station would only be seriously detrimental to those that are trying

to fight Israel's case abroad, " she wrote.

" It would be madness to abandon English broadcasts, " wrote one

correspondent from the UK, citing a perceived anti-Israel bias of the

BBC " influencing a whole UK generation... But then madness seems to

be a common malady in today's Israel. "

" Instead of shutting down we should be expanding this incredible

resource, " concluded an Israeli writer. " If there are major problems,

repair them. This is our face to the world. "

In a letter to the heads of the IBA, meanwhile, Prof. Elihu Richter

of the Hebrew University-Hadassah School of Public Health and

Community Medicine called the plan to cut the IBA English

broadcasts " a stupid exercise in self-destruction at a time when

there never has been a greater need for increasing the English

language service. "

" Imagine what would have happened in WWII had the BBC decided to cut

its broadcasts to the world - broadcasting its messages to far and

wide about Britain's fight against Nazi Germany - or the US had

decided to cut its Radio Free Europe and Voice of America broadcasts

to those living under Communist tyranny, " Richter asked.

" Broadcasts of Israel's message to the world are part of Israel's

fight for existence at a time of unparalleled danger to the country, "

he stated. " The answer to the massive amount of misinformation and

disinformation about Israel is a strengthened Israeli news service

and program broadcasting to the world in all languages. "

In an editorial last week, the Post noted that " Israel gets too few

opportunities to present its perspective overseas. For Israel to thus

undercut its own obvious interest boggles the mind. "

It went on: " Military contests are only one facet of the challenges

Israel faces. Waging a convincing battle for hearts and minds

overseas is essential. In this inherently crucial conflict Israel

must not lose any outlet for its voice, especially not the IBA's

voice in English. "

A Brief History of CAMERA

The Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America, or

CAMERA, was founded in Washington, DC in 1982 by Winifred Meiselman,

a teacher and social worker. Mrs. Meiselman formed CAMERA to respond

to the Washington Post's coverage of Israel's Lebanon incursion, and

to the paper's general anti-Israel bias. Joining CAMERA's Executive

Board in the early days were such prominent Washington-area residents

as Saul Stern and Bernard White. Win also recruited an Advisory Board

which included Senators Rudy Boschwitz and Charles Grassley,

Congressman Tom Lantos, journalist M. Stanton Evans, Ambassador

Charles Lichenstein, Pastor Roy Stewart, and Rabbi David Yellin.

Under Win's leadership CAMERA created chapters in major cities,

including New York, Chicago, Fort Lauderdale, Los Angeles, Miami, San

Francisco, Philadelphia, and in 1988 a Boston chapter and office,

founded and led by Andrea Levin. Ms. Levin had taught English in

inner city Philadelphia, and later served as associate editor of the

Journal of Policy Analysis and Management at Harvard's Kennedy School

of Government.

In 1989, CAMERA took a large step forward with a highly successful

conference organized by the Boston chapter: " The Media, The Message

and The Middle East. " The event galvanized public interest concerning

the media's power to sway public opinion on Middle East policy – and

the potential harm of distorted coverage. Held at Boston's Park Plaza

Hotel, the conference drew an overflow crowd of more than 1000

attendees, and featured such well-known speakers as Norman Podhoretz,

editor of Commentary Magazine, Ambassador Alan Keyes, Professors Alan

Dershowitz of Harvard University, Ruth Wisse of McGill University,

Jerrold Auerbach of Wellesley, and David Wyman of UMass Amherst.

Joining these speakers were Ms. Levin, who documented the Boston

Globe's bias against Israel, and the Boston chapter's Deputy, Charles Jacobs, who critiqued a biased teacher's guide

which accompanied a PBS documentary.

CAMERA's 1989 Conference fills the Park Plaza Ballroom.

After the conference the Boston chapter continued to grow rapidly, as

the Executive Board was joined by noted professionals in law and

medicine, as well as a number of Boston's top business leaders,

including the co-founders of such major firms as Timberland and

Staples

In 1991 Ms. Meiselman retired due to health problems, and leadership

of the organization passed to Ms. Levin. The Boston chapter became

the national – and eventually the only – office of CAMERA, as the

local chapters were allowed to reincorporate separately or to close.

(Notably, the San Francisco chapter, headed by entrepreneur Gerardo

Joffe, became FLAME, Facts and Logic about the Middle East, and

exists to this day.)

Under Ms. Levin's leadership CAMERA's membership grew within a few

years from 1000 to over 20,000, and now numbers over 55,000, and

besides the Boston headquarters the organization also has offices in

Washington, DC, New York, Chicago, and Israel.

Over the years CAMERA has focused major efforts on improving coverage

of Israel and the Middle East by such major outlets as the New York

Times, the Boston Globe, the Los Angeles Times, National Public Radio

(NPR), the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), and ABC News.

While there have been major successes with most of these outlets,

there is also a continuing need for monitoring and interaction.

New projects initiated by CAMERA in recent years include:

The CAMERA Fellows Program, to teach college students how to write op-

ed's, start campus journals, and recognize and respond to propaganda.

Sessions have been held around the United States, and in June 2006

more than 20 of the participants were flown to Israel for intensive

training sessions and to provide a direct, personal experience of the

country and the challenges it faces. Students met with Israeli

academics, government spokesmen, recently retired senior intelligence

officials, young Israeli soldiers, Israeli journalists, Palestinian

journalists, and foreign journalists. Participants also got to see

first- hand much of the country.

The British Project, to deal with major media in Britain, such as the

Guardian, the Independent, and the BBC, which have global reach and

all too often have problematic Middle East coverage.

The Christian Project, to deal with distorted Middle East coverage in

Christian publications, and to do outreach to the Christian

community.

As it enters its 25th year in 2007 CAMERA continues to expand its

programing and reach. Increased challenges have been met with

increased innovation and effectiveness.

CAMERA

Founded in 1982, the Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting

in America is a media-monitoring, research and membership

organization devoted to promoting accurate and balanced coverage of

Israel and the Middle East. CAMERA fosters rigorous reporting, while

educating news consumers about Middle East issues and the role of the

media. Because public opinion ultimately shapes public policy,

distorted news coverage that misleads the public can be detrimental

to sound policymaking. A non-partisan organization, CAMERA takes no

position with regard to American or Israeli political issues or with

regard to ultimate solutions to the Arab-Israeli conflict.

The scope of the problem

Inaccurate and distorted accounts of events in Israel and the Middle

East are to be found everywhere from college radio stations to

network television, from community newspapers to national magazines,

and, of course, on the Internet. In recent years misinformation about

the Middle East has also surfaced in fashion magazines, architectural

publications, encyclopedias, professional reference works, geography

textbooks, travel guides, and even dictionaries. Frequently

inaccurate and skewed characterizations of Israel and of events in

the Middle East may fuel anti-Israel and anti-Jewish prejudice.

How CAMERA works

CAMERA systematically monitors, documents, reviews and archives

Middle East coverage. Staffers directly contact reporters, editors,

producers and publishers concerning distorted or inaccurate coverage,

offering factual information to refute errors. CAMERA members are

encouraged to write letters for publication in the print media and to

communicate with correspondents, anchors and network officials in the

electronic media. CAMERA's combination of rigorous monitoring,

research, fact-checking, careful analysis, and grassroots efforts

have had a documented impact.

How CAMERA members are kept informed

Members receive a variety of publications, including:

The CAMERA Media Report

Action Alerts detailing specific media misrepresentations

The CAMERA Media Directory, containing contact information for media

outlets

Members of CAMERA's e-mail team receive frequent Alerts and

information.

In addition, CAMERA staffers regularly assist members seeking

specific information.

CAMERA's work is frequently cited in the secular and Jewish press,

and in journalism reviews.

CAMERA on college campuses

Increasingly, campuses have been the scene of propagandistic assaults

on Israel. Distorted literature, extreme speakers and false,

inflammatory images are all too common, creating harmful

misperceptions of Israel. This hostile environment can be

intimidating to students seeking fair and objective information on

Middle East issues.

CAMERA publishes a student-focused magazine, CAMERA on Campus,

containing specialized information useful in countering

misinformation. CAMERA also provides one-on-one assistance to

students who encounter Middle East distortions in campus

publications, flyers, rallies and classroom teaching.

How to participate

Join CAMERA. CAMERA is 501©(3) nonprofit and contributions are tax-

deductible to the full extent allowed by law.

Join CAMERA's e-mail team and respond to Action Alerts.

Call and write independently whenever possible to counter media

misinformation.

religious groups, schools and civic organizations.
