Hi Shelloid

I hope you enjoy it here. We're a little quiet at present (maybe people

have hangovers) but it is usually fairly busy.

I think that being branded as a weirdo is part and parcel of being

vegan; I only know of two in my neighbourhood, one being me, the

other is my brother. I live in Norfolk, and most people here have

been brought up with the concept of the bright cheerful farm. Their

ill-founded traditional beliefs hold fast and they are often annoyed

by the very fact that I dislike it. Moreover, I am sure that almost

everyone in this group has had to endure many grueling conversations

with heartless folk who speak of 'vegans being unhealthy' etc and

getting 'special things' from meat. Am I alone to in being angered

by this blatant ignorance?

I only joined the group last week myself, I've had no problems

yet. I hope you enjoy the group.

special things?? would that be cancer? antibiotics?? pesticides? cholesterol?

*sardonic smile*

and ya know, ya just never get use to the " but, what do you eat then "

statements...

oh well..tis a torture device we must bare, and hopefully, slowly, we can

continue to educate folks...including ourselves

I certainly have - but at least we all know that it is them showing their

ignorance.

People never seem to question my veganism. Sometimes (like at work

yesterday) they even apologise for discussing meat in front of me.

I must say this sounds familiar. Ever since I made

the switch, I have been regarded as weird. People

talk to me like I should be in a hospital. For

example, I come to work one day and mention I am a

little tired. They say you arent getting your iron

etc etc you should eat meat and you will be strong.

I laugh at this nonsense because I am the only person

in my small town that lifts weights every second day

and runs 3.25 miles almost daily. I am actually

getting quite ripped. But I mention that I am tired

once, and it is because I dont eat meat. I dont think

so. I havent even had a cold since switching. It is

just ignorance. I feel so much better since I have

been vegan. People think I am insane.

Wow, a neighbour! Hiya - I'm in Bognor, 15 miles(ish) to the east along the

coast. I could practically wave to you! Do you eat out much? I've only

ever had one vegan meal in Portsmouth (well, Southsea to be precise) and it

was a bit small and sad. Where should I go next time?

Cheers

well I don't eat out much, but I've heard that Rickshaws on Albert Road is very good. They even have abigsign outside saying that they cater for vegans so it must be true! I've not been there myself but my boyfriend has highly recommended it as a restaurant that caters well for vegans (unfortunately he's not vegan but I have trained him well - ie wherever he goes he asks if they cater for vegans!) Especially good about it is if you go before 7pm its an eat all you want buffet bar!!!! Wow, keep meaning to try it but haven't got round to it.

We're having corn chowder with cheese biscuits

was artichoke and feta lasagna.

I've already made the soup and muffins. I may make baked

apples - I use the microwave for this, it only takes a

minute or two.

hi everyone, have belonged to the group for a while but have never written anything, just read what was being sent to me. So here goes. My name is Bek, I'm 23 years old. Vegan been a veggie on and off since birth. Had a mulitude of health probs and so turned to the vegan lifestyle. Find it diffucult though being wheat intolerant and vegan and shopping in normal supermarkets such as Asda, trying to find things to eat on the run. I live in Telford, Shropshire, have a hubbie and a dog and am doing a full time degree in fine art in birmingham, so spend alot of my time commuting and working, hence the eating on the run! If anyone wants to get in touch just to talk or to help with ideas, would love to hear from you. nikki_mackovitch <nikkimack wrote:

Hi Bek

It's good to hear from you. I too am wheat intolerant(but am okay with spelt wheat) so I know it is difficult when shopping. I get my spelt bread from Maison Blanc, but I don't think there are any branches in Shropshire. I also use pastas made from buckwheat, kamut or spelt, and Trufree biscuits occasionally.
