1/22/08: CALL-IN DAY FOR HORSES KINSHIP CIRCLE PRIMARY - PERMISSION TO CROSS-POST AS WRITTEN 1/19/08: January 22 Is National Call-In Day For Horses! Unite To Save Horses From Transport To Slaughter In Mexico, Canada http://www.KinshipCircle.org =========================================================== AN HSUS INITIATIVE -- BRIEF BACKGROUND =========================================================== Mark your calendars for January 22, 2008,

National Call-In Day for Horses! https://community.hsus.org/humane/notice-description.tcl?newsletter_id=18385057 The doors on the last remaining U.S. horse slaughter plants have been shuttered. Now, Congress must pass the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (H.R. 503/S. 311) to end the transport to slaughter of American horses to Mexico and Canada. Even when plants were operating within the U.S., several thousand horses were exported to Mexico and Canada annually. Brutally long trips end in grisly slaughter... The need for federal legislation has never been more urgent than today. PHOTO: A one-eyed pony, center, huddles near another pony. Photo: Sally Ryan for The New York Times. "Hello, this is [your name]. I am a voting constituent from [your town]. I urge [your Rep or Senator’s name] to support the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (H.R. 503/S. 311) to end the transport to slaughter of American horses in Mexico and

Canada. Like the majority of Americans, I oppose the needless slaughter of horses for human consumption. We must stop exporting our horses to a grisly death over the border. I am counting on your support and swift passage of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. Thank you for your time and consideration.” MORE TALKING POINTS ** Please advocate swift passage of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (H.R. 503/S. 311) to ban horse export and slaughter for the purpose of human consumption. ** Recent court rulings pronounced horse slaughter illegal in Texas and Illinois. With no legitimate equine processors left in the U.S., about

30,000 American horses were exported to Mexican slaughterhouses this year. ** While fewer American horses have been killed since the closure of U.S. operations, those shipped to Mexico die even more violently than those in U.S. slaughterhouses. ** Since slaughterhouses closed in the U.S., we’ve seen a 370 percent surge in American horses trucked to Mexican kill floors. Please help pass the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act to outlaw horse export to Mexico, Canada, and other nations for slaughter. ** Horses travel 700 or more miles to kill floors, stuffed inside double-deck trucks or other vehicles built for smaller livestock. Most arrive

dehydrated, weak and mangled. Some are dead by journey’s end, a veterinarian at the Ciudad Juarez equine plant in Mexico maintains. ** Last fall, the Houston Chronicle described Mexican horse slaughterhouses in U.S. Ban On Horse Slaughter Means A More Gruesome Death Elsewhere. At Mexico’s Ciudad Juarez plant, horses restrained in kill boxes are pierced with a small knife “seven, eight, nine times.” By the 10th stab around her withers, one horse collapses. Paralyzed but not dead, she is suspended from her rear leg while workers slit her throat. ** American voters overwhelmingly oppose the export and brutal treatment of horses. Please help expedite passage of the American
