Anyone know what Huang Niu Bi is, Yellow Ox Nose, how it is used or prepared

etc? It is used in a formula by Dr. Xia Guisheng to treat threatened

miscarriage.

I can't find any hits in the Zhong Yao Da Ci Dian for Huang Niu Bi, but there is

medicinal called ox's nose (niu bi) that is literally the nose of the creature.

Huang Niu means cow, so it is quite possible that the drug in question is

actually cow's nose. The item Niu Bi is used to treat absence of milk in women.

This link has info (in Chinese) on it:

Thanks so much Eric,

I also found this bit on it by Xia Guisheng...

It mentions a couple of other herbs I don't know like Mian Huang Wa and Shi Yan

(a fossilized bird I think)......Do you find anything on the Mian Huang Wa?

Dr. Xia is using the yellow ox nose (yes, it is the actual nose of the cow) in a

formula to protect the fetus in emaciated weak women....

Huang Niu Bi

The action of this herb is the same as Beef. In the Shi Liao Ben Cao (Dietetic

Materia Medica) points out that this “treats lack of breast milk in women.

Make a thick soup and drink on an empty stomachâ€. The Ben Cao Shi Yi

(Supplement to ‘The Grand Compendium of Materia Medica) “Yellow ox nose can

be boiled with Shi Yan (Cyrtiospirifer sinensis) and served as a drink. This

will disperse thirst†Beef is sweet, neutral and without toxin. It enters

the Spleen channel. It functions to boost the Qi and blood and it fortifies the

Spleen and Kidney and strengthens the tendons and bones. It is able to treat

deficiency emaciation and dispersion thirst illness as well as deficiency cold

in the Spleen and stomach with no desire for food or drinkâ€. The Hua Zi Ben

Cao (Magnificent Child Materia Medica) says “The meat of the water ox is

cold. The meat of the yellow ox is warmâ€. The Han Dai Yi Tong (Medicial

Understanding from the Han Dynasty) says “Yellow ox meat supplements the Qi

and has the same function as 绵黄瓦 Mian Huang Waâ€. We can see from these

writings the Huang Niu Bi is warm and that it supplements the Spleen Qi. With

Du Zhong is supplements both the Spleen and Kidney and is therefore an important

protect-the-fetus herb.
