Herbs 1: Study Questions Winter 2005 These questions are to prepare for the exams and quizzes. Answers must be submitted via email weekly. Quizzes and exams will mainly cover these questions and herb functions and categories. No more than 5% will be devoted to other information on the syllabus (such as entering channels, flavors and temperatures Week 1-2 1. List the characteristics (desirable or undesirable) of Inferior medicinals as classified by the authors of Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing (The Divine Husbandman's Materia Medica). A= Inferior medicinals specifically treat disease or severe symptoms short term and usually are somewhat toxic. 2. What general properties are possessed by medicinals with a cold temperature and a bitter taste? A=Cold temperature and bitter taste descends, drains and dries. 3. Which tastes and temperatures (qi) are contraindicated for bleeding from the nose (epistaxis) due to lung heat? A=Hot temperature and bitter taste. 4. What are important points to remember about entering channels for medicinals? A= Entering channel means what effect the given herb has on the specific channel or area of body. 5. What is the key conceptual shift in Chinese medicine embodied in the Huang Di Nei Jing/ Yellow Emperor's Canon of Internal Medicine? A= Naturalistic observation rather than shamanism or magic. Medicine based on natural rules and relationships of nature 6. Describe the differences in content and general organization of the Shang Han Lun (On Cold Damage) and Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing (The Divine Husbandman's Materia Medica). A=Shang Han Lan introduced the six channel pattern identification for diagnosis and treatment of diseases caused by exterior wind and cold, while Shen Nong Den Cao introduced agriculture and aninal husbandry tasted " hundred herbs " . He Is the lengendary patron of herbal medicine. 7. The choice of medicinals for given disease patterns is governed and informed by knowledge of the specific qualities of medicinals. Demonstrate the role of taste, qi (temperature), upbearing and downbearing, and entering channels of medicinals by indicating which of each would be required to treat the patterns listed below. Please explain the rationale behind your choices. a. Spleen and kidney yang vacuity with enduring diarrhea A=Shen - upbearing, astringent, sour, acrid, sweet, warm, and hot. b. Repletion heat in the yang ming with high fever, profuse sweating, and thirst. A=Jiang- downbearing, sour, bitter, cold, acrid. (Example: for treating depressed fire in liver and gallbladder causing ear pain we would look for a medicinal which was bitter, cold, downbearing, and which enters the liver and gallbladder channels.) Matching: Correlate the combination of tastes and temperature (qi) with the corresponding treatment strategy listed below.
