Al,

sham surgery is used in experimental surgery as a placebo group "treatment" where a useless operation is performed in a control group as to see wether there are any statistical relevant differences between the sham surgery and the experimental surgery group of patients... God bless the methods of modern medicine!

The same applies to sham acupuncture - usually japanese needles with tubes are applied and the patient cannot see wether the needle has penetrated through the skin or not. However also the application of the placebo needle gives some kind of sensation that makes the patient believe there might have been a penetration by the needle.

By the way - in a study done in a german university clinic recently with patients suffering from chronical shoulder problems, the acupuncture group showed a highly significant better result then the sham acupuncture group. This might not be very surprising for someone practizing acupuncture but if it helps to convince some people who are still asking for "scientific proof" of what we are doing I think its ok. However I definitly don´t think that there is any moral justification for sham surgery.
