Park GJ, Mann SP, Ngu MC Department of Gastroenterology, Concord Repatriation General Hospital, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. gjhpark [Medline record in process] Herbal preparations are widely available and generally regarded by the public as harmless remedies for a variety of medical ailments. We report the first case in Australia of acute hepatitis associated with the Chinese herbal medicine Shou-Wu-Pian, prepared from Polygonum multiflorum. Cholestatic hepatitis developed in a Chinese woman taking this preparation for the greying of her hair, and liver biopsy was consistent with a toxic reaction. Clinical and biochemical resolution occurred following cessation of the drug. PMID: 11206309 -- Chinese Herbal Medicine

If my memory serves me well, this pian/tablet is sugar-coated, and many sugar coated tablets contain added pharmaceuticals.
Guest guest
there was case some years ago in sydney where a woman also had liver damage from taking Chinese herbal tonics. At first they blamed the herbs...but then it was found the herbs were in alcohol. Worse , it was some cheap Chinese wood alcohol that did the damage. Maybe this woman was also doing something similar.Maybe it was the herb......? By the way the same hospital in Concord recently released an article in a medical journal over here where doctors have " discovered " that BINAN capsules (a Chinese patent for sinus) effectively treat sinus 87 % . So I don't take too seriously anything that comes out Concord hospital. The problem is most doctors reading the stuff about shou wu will believe it.
